A few years back a NJTransit train was shot at, and a guy in the car he was riding was actually hit by the bullet. I recall he was all right, but it just makes you wonder. It must have been a high powered rifle, it went through the side of the passenger car!
Non-sense, the sides of passenger cars are very thin and are only aluminum or a lower grade steel.

In the middle 1970’s I picked up three rounds in a trailer I was pulling on I-80
west of the Mile Run exit, found them when I stopped in the rest area
about MP199. I was deer season then.
Many farmers have taken hits when bored hunters have mistaken green
painted metal and yellow wheels for fair game [Deere’s], maybe they mistook a
CP beaver on a red engine as a fair game shot?

remember teh 2 most dangerous things to mix are alchohol and lethal firepower. If they find the guy who shot at teh engine I wonder what his story is going to be.
Unfortunately, just like any hobby, there are dumb and law-breaking hunters, just like there are dumb and lawbreaking railfans.
I’m proud to say I know there’s difference and just because there’s a few bad apples doesn’t mean the bunch is bad.
The sad thing is, if the shooter went to court, and they asked him why he shot the bullet, and he said “I saw a beaver” They may actually beleive him.
I guess the shooter was “Train Hunting!”
