Ok guys here is the querey…I have an atheren rtr 250t crane… looking to detail the heck out of it… Ive done serches for rr cranes and cant seem to find goos pictues of one. Who were the manifactures of thoes big hooks? any one got a link to good detail pics? any info wou;d be helpful…thanks in advance

Articles on cranes or wreck trains are few and far between. Railroad Model Craftsman, July 1990 had an article “Southern Pacific Relief Train” that had details of wreck train w/ steam crane, and a combine converted to boom car. Maybe you could get a reprint from RMC.

You did not mention the road name you are modeling, but some of the Morning Sun books (yes, expensive) have photos of MOW equipment. “Northern New England Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment” has photos of cranes belonging to Bangor & Aroostook, Boston & Maine, Canadian Pacific, Central Vermont, Maine Central, and Rutland. The advertising on the back cover shows similar equipment color guides for PRR, NYC, Reading and UP; probably more have been published since my copy came out.

Out of curiosity I did an advanced google search on “train” with exact phrase “big hook” and found this among many other sites.

Try looking at www.rr-fallenflags.org , look under the rail road like C&O, freight or MOW equipement. C&O cranes are listed as MWW WC-17 and 22. Ken

Hi Budliner: Do you have any information on that shovel in the last picture? I’m always looking for information on them. I’m doing an iron ore hauling RR in northern Michigan and am going to do a part of an open pit mine.

Here are a couple of photos of the crane and crane tender I built some years ago for my last layout. I had the crane and tender posed at the engine house near the steam boiler so the crane boiler could be kept “hot” in case it was needed.

The crane is based on an article in MR from July, 1980 “Build a Wreck Train”. The article shows how to kitbash a diesel crane from the Athern 250 Ton crane. It also includes a number of support cars. The crane decals are Champ BRH-32, “Gould Wrecking Train”.

Here’s my version of a CN 250 ton crane, dieselized as mentioned in the previous message:

I did this before Athearn came out with the same paint scheme, I did mine the hard way, masking and painting.

By the time CSX came into being, most railroads were contracting out heavy lifting. You may want to do some research if any former Chessie/C&O and other assimulated RR heavy cranes made it into CSX. The photo by Heartland Division pulling the CN diesel up the mountain is the way things would be done now.

In the late 80s, in Waldoboro, ME there was an accident between a Maine Coast RR S-2 and a truck full of eggs. The S-2 was knocked off the tracks and MCRR brought in a 200 ton road crane to set it and the derailed cars back on the tracks.

That is not to say you can do anything you want to do - BIG rail cranes are cool and add to a scene even if they are just on a siding in the yard waiting for work.[8D]

All the CSX cranes I’ve seen are smaller ones.

The crane that I bought was lettered for CSX with B&O reporting marks and the 2 pics that I found of the prototype were just as the model less a bunch of details and the neat cut out on the roof rear for what looked like mufflers.

Those were all small Burro cranes, mostly for light maintenance. I do not remember the capacity - probably only a few tons; not like the 200 or 250 ton ‘big hook’ wreck cranes

I know, thats kinda what I was getting at. Those Burro’s were all 7 tonners I think, but thats what CSX has around here.
