Creating snow on buildings

Hi,

I am attempting to create a snow village for my model railroad scene. I have miniature houses made of resin that I need to put snow on the roofs of. does anyone have any recommendations or ideas about how to do this (besides buying a snow kit)? Thank You.

If you carefully study pictures of a snowy village, you will note, that the roofs are covered with a “pillow” of snow - like shown on the following pic:

Sprinkling snow powder of a roof won´t give you this effect. The best is to take a sheet of maybe 1/8" Styrofoam to cover the roof, shape it with sandpaper and give it a coat of white latex paint, to which you may add some glitter.

I agree with Ulrich. If you want big piles of snow on your roof, that’s the way to do it. Use a piece of foam to shape it, then paint it white (if it isn’t already), paint some 50% strength white glue on it, and sprinkle commercial “snow” on it. Several companies make this product, including Noch, Woodland Scenics and Scenery Express.

If you just want a dusting, use the glue and snow by itself.

Also, for a nice touch, buy some artists acrylic gloss gel and use it to create icicles along the eaves.
