Why does CSX #666 have the blue lettering without yellow outside lineing on the side of the Engine?
The guy with the yellow paint was superstitious?
It’s the Mark of the Beast!
I read about that in some book that was written about 1900 years ago, in the section with the writings from the apostle Fred:
And low, as I say unto thee: Beware of the tranformed creature that was once a cute cat, but would become a large monster. And be aware that this monster will be huge, it will be made up of a number of smaller creatures that it ate, and it will known by many names, and will be marked differently than similar creatures, and it will have a number, and that number will be 666.
Or something to that effect.

have seen it come through here.conductors and road foreman have had fun with that # but I cant put what they say here.

[tup] to what Mookie said. Take a bow !
Larry’s made me laugh, but zardoz’s is priceless ! That’s a show-stopper - the kind that doesn’t happen but once a year, if even that often. It could be read at any rail-oriented convention (although some might be offended - I’m not). You ghost-writing for Mel Brooks now ?
I am sure we all know what that number is supposed to represent, whether this particular engine is painted differently because of it I couldn’t guess.
it suffered an engine fire and had the center portion of the hood repainted and ended up with the then standard blue lettering rather than the yellow outlined by blue. CSX #633 and 667 also recieved this same treatment following engine fires.

I think the other ideas were more fun… [:o)]
This may be true - but why did it have an engine fire ? A new portal to you-know-where ? Mobile, no less ?
I agree with Larry - the other ideas are more fun. “Back in the day” this would be like a loco with the #13 - a jinx or “hoo-doo”, and the superstitious engine crews would turn it ,or bury it 2 deep back in the loco lash-up, or anything else they could get away with to avoid actually being involved with it. I knew some M-O-W guys who would have been completely spooked by this if they had ever seen it. (“Henry ? George ? Roger ? Stroman ? Where you goin’ to in such a hurry, man ? Put that voodoo stuff away and get back to work !”)
- Paul North.
My hotel doesn’t have a 13th floor…but come on people on the 14th, you know where you really are! As quoted by the late stand up Mitch Hedberg.
I agree with Lary, the other ideas were more fun![(-D] Superstition aside, does this locomotive happen to be a AC6000CW? A man by the name of Clifford Staton, now the president of CSX’s human relations, once a engineer, gave me a postor with CSX locomotive 600 on it . This loco’ is a AC6000CW. So is the loco’ 666 a 6000CW to?
the other ideas night have been “fun” but the person who started this thread wanted a real answer to his question, not a childish answer.
The fire was likely caused by a ruptured fuel line, a common occurance on GE locomotives.
Bryan Jones
And you gave him the real answer to his question.
Some levity needs to happen occasionally to keep the forum from reading like an advanced science textbook.
A good mix will keep the forum more interesting for a larger majority of people.

Whell Bah Humbug to you… No, just kidding. I agree with the others you have to have some fun on here once in a while! Otherwise it would be like reading a dictonary for 8 hours straight.
I believe BNSF renumbered ex SF 666 to 599 to avoid this subject. I believe they left the 666 slot void, please correct me if I’m wrong.
Bryan - if the question had been about engine 7428, it would probably would have been answered and sunk into obscurity.
It was about #666 - about which number many people are superstitious. I’d probably have posted the same thing if it had been engine #13 (which CSX may or may not have, although I’m pretty sure they have them numbered that low - I’ve seen #5).
A little levity never hurt anyone.
Of course, your answer could lead to comments about “toasters,” too…
But Lary, I was born on the 13th of December In room # 13. I have an Amtrak P40 #13. I don’t think 13 is unlucky! You didn’t offend me any. I like the comment ton the toaster[(-D]!
