CSX C39-8s

Found a picture of a CSX C39-8 (#7489).

I didn’t know CSX ever had any of these.

How many did they have? Are they all gone? When did they get rid of them? Why?

csx had 9 ex cr c39-8`s 7480 - 7488

photos of them on this website

they were retired , well cause they are C39`s.

Retired because they are 20 years old…NS is retiring theirs now as well.

some are living on! in Alberta, Canada on the Savage Alberta Railway: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=191277&nseq=2

Here is a NS unit I stumbled across awhile back…probably the last time I will ever see one. [sigh]

Thanks for the info. Wow, that C39-8 in YN3 looked great.

Some of the former CSX C39-8s on the Sacage Alberta Railway are now being retired, again. CN bought SAR and now they are slowly disposing of the ex-CSX C39-8s. NREX just bought 3 of them from CN at a auction at Homewood.

Most of the C39-8s CSX had they sold to NS right after the split. I saw one of the NRE/Savage units at Locomotive Specialist in Waycross, GA. NS is retiring them as they have mechanical failures. However they are not dropping that fast. Saw an x-CR in KC a month ago. Every time I am near NS rails I see one on a train.

There is some setting in the deadline at homewood at least they were there memorial day weekend saw one in savage paint and CSX YN2 AND YN3 paint. don’t know if they are still there tho. I will be back there thanksgiving week.or should i say woodcrest.

Oh by the way i am going to be spending alot of time this weekend in belivue oh. and berea ohio. I am also doing a big stint in spencer, ohio am going to pay very close attention to the C39-8’s that i see and take alot of pictures of them.

I remember all those being the NEW engines and the latest technology! Where does the time GO?

[#ditto]

I can remember all of the hype on them as well. Seems like last week but now it’s been 20 years.

When they finally retire those on NS it is going to be different going to dolton jct ill. and not seeing any NSC39-8’s they always seem to be on the NS trains running on the IHB.

That is incorrect. The 9 former Conrail C39-8’s that CSX aquired in the splitup of Conrail were never sold to NS. When the lease expired on the units, CSX chose not to renew it and the units were stored pending disposition. The units were subsequently purchased by National Railway Equipment who in turn leased the 9 units to Savage Alberta Railway. Now that CN has reaquired Savage they have retired most of the C39-8’s with a couple still in service that will be retired shortly.

oops! Got them mixed up with the x-CR dash-7s the NS sold to CSX.

Spent a lot of time in ohio this weekend i didn’t see any at all. NOT GOOD!

At the location of what used to be called Pogue on the East end of Louisville, KY near the Ford Truck Plant.

I’ve been missing those brutes since I first heard CSX disposed of them. The first time I saw one, was almost the last train I’d ever see. It nearly clocked a semi loaded with explosives at 60 mph (needless to say Rydal, Ga would have been dust). [:O]

EDIT: SSW9389, that’s the same one!
