CSX Caboose 900423

I discovered another active caboose used by CSX over in Atlanta, Georgia a few weeks ago while watching the Blue Angles perform at Dobbins AFB. The caboose is sitting in a small yard just outside of the base, and I think that its use is obvious. However, I was wondering if anybody had any history on it. This is the first that I have seen painted baby blue, and I wanted to see if any of you new its history.

Thanks in advance!

What’s it’s use, are they using it as a greenhouse or something?

lol, no although that yard is becoming a bit of a garden. Its stenciled “shoving platform.” So I assume that it is used like the other CSX cabooses in GA as a place for a crewmember to stand durring reverse operations. The local in Athens uses theirs in that manner all the time, however, this is the first that I have seen that was labeled.

Oh, I couldn’t make out the wording on the side.

Montana Rail Link found a pretty good use for all of their cabooses, they hold all the electronics for their remote loco operations.

Looks neat too see them all buzzing around the yard, it’s nice that they didn’t all end up in the scrap yard.

BC Rail actually still uses cabooses in some places up noth. Apparently you have to either have a Wayside detection system ever 60 miles or your train must have a caboose.

Well, because there are some spots up North that have no access to electricity and you don’t get enough ligh tto power up the solar panels, it worked out to be cheaper just to keep the cabooses in operaiton.

I’m gonna have to try and get up there and see this before CN takes over.

Yes, it is a lot of fun down here. CSX still has a number of cabooses in service on their locals.

Wow. What a nice looking caboose. I saw one in Worcester, MA on a work train a few weeks ago but it was all tagged, beat-up, and all the windows busted out. What a shame.

HELP! I have pictures of this caboose. How do I post a picture of it? I have tried copying it but the ‘Paste’ feature is not turned on. Thanks. ww

Dough,

That caboose was used on a welded rail train about 8 months ago and has been sitting there since that use.

Believe I read in Trains that CSX had converted several cabooses into “shoving platforms” What this entailed, was the removal of all inside creature comforts, bunks, tables, seats, etc, and I believe even welding the doors shut.CSX had several "platforms"working the Tampa Division.Have seen several cabooses in regular configuration working CSX locals out of Montgomery Alabama.

I would think that caboose is a former B and O
