CSX, first responders team up as more crude rides the rails
As a fire fighter in a combination volunteer and paid fire department, I am keenly aware of the volume of hazardous materials which travel through our community on a daily basis. After seeing in a recent issue of Trains that the NS rail line through our community is a major route for crude oil trains, I had the opportunity to attend a jointly sponsored rail hazmat training session last week. This session was held by Conrail, CSX and Norfolk Southern just outside of Philadelphia PA. The training was great but unfortunately only two of us were able to attend since it was held on a workday and most volunteers are working then. I like the concept that CSX is using to bring the traing to the communities along their routes. Coincidently, three hours after returning home from our rail training, we had a fire involving 2 gondolas loaded with railroad tie debris on a moving NS work train. Having had the training allowed me to interact more efficiently with the train crew.
Let’s get the other four states on line as soon as possible.

Are these seminars open to the public? What happens if my friend gets slimed by crude oil while standing along a train platform? Does this become a national issue?
