For anyone still interested in this “story”, I did some checking around the Russell, Ky crew room about this “incident”. About me,…I am a road and yard driver for PTI. The area in question for the ET encounter amazes me. Mostly because it is in total darkness. If they had shutdown their lights because they thought there was an oncoming train, then how was it possible to know it’s true dimensions, color and the fact it had no windows. It is suspected that an engineer off the northern division concocted the story to amuse everyone. I think it worked don’t you? I know that at least one of those engines is still in service and has been in the Russell yard on several occasions over the past year.

Interestingly enough, I recently heard a cdr of a radio broadcast by Negativland called “Another UFO” which was mainly based on older radio broadcasts from the 1950s and 1960s. These included news reports of several UFO sightings including some involving rail. Remember one involved the crew of a Monon train (think this was from the 1950s) who reported seeing a UFO. Another, involved a Santa Fe train (think from Arizona or California) - again, think they were reports from the 1950s - again, where the crew reported seeing an UFO and I think reported that the engine stopped while the UFO passed overhead. Both were reports given to NICAP (National Investigation Commission of Ariel Phenonum). Much of the Air Force material from the early 1950s when they had the investigations of UFO sightings are now in the National Archieves.
Very interesting to look back at the Air Force/government investigation of UFOs (think it was called Operation Paperclip - correction, it was Project Blue Book - Paperclip was a 1950s nuclear test) - for the most part, the large number of UFO sightings in the early 1950s probably was a combination of testing of top secret aircraft and weather ballon programs and Cold War inspired hysteria which lead to people to credit extraterrerials for weird/unexplained lights. In fact, subsequent studies have shown that many of the UFO sightings in the 1950s/early 1960s had a strong corrilation with the flights of the U2 spy plane and other then classified aircraft. The classified nature of programs (the Roswell weather baloon was involved in a top secret programs) lead to UFO/government conspiracy theories when the government provided little information beyond blaming mass hysteria. A rather fascinating topic.
Was the CSX train pulling white KCS boxcars, by chance? Escorted by black helicopters? [alien]
