CSX or NS? Which would be better to model?

If I could ask, what railroad would be better to model: CSX of NS. The layout will be a 19.5 ft by 11.5 ft Double Decker layout. I will have room for one Large yard, and I was intrested in servicing a GM or GE plant. I would like it to be a lower southeast track: Virginia to Flordia, Georgia to Alabama.

Thanks[8D]

Well…do you prefer Roscoe P. Coltrane or Colonel Klink?

I guess, for me, it would boil down to what your favorite route is. CSX seems to be have more historical continuity to it, somehow. I still have a hard time seeing NS as anything but an overgrown coal hauler.

(I think I’d better go now…)

Niether, I’d model D&RGW or Santa Fe, but then I am about as far out West as you can get, or was that I’m just too ‘far out’ …[;)][D)][:-^]

Let ya reb Easterners answer this Southn’boys questions…[:D]

How about droping a few years and just go with southern but with the 2 you give it would be NS if I was doing it I prefer Southern or Virginian for southern train and a mid south to northern would be B&O

Do both. I’ve seen both road name locos in consists. I’ve seen CP Rail power with NS too. That’s one reason I model the general area I do. I’m not locked into one road name. I think you will be able to find more CSX equipment for sale than NS.

Dear Loathar,

Thanks for the info. If you could, I would like to get some onfo on sites of info on these trains.

THANKS[:)]

Here’s a good site for CSX pics. I get a lot of prototype info here.

Wiki has some good info and history too. I’m sure you could search Wiki for NS and get similar info too. I was really surprised how much railroad info and history they have on their site.
Wish Wiki and the internet had been around when I was in school.

The size of the layout is irrelevant to the question. I am certain both GM and GE plants are serviced by both railroads. Both railroads operate in lower southeast. So choose which one you like better. According to an comparison I did of the two for a graduate economics class, as far as money goes the NS was a better run railroad.

If you model CSX, you don’t have to worry about the quality of your trackwork… They’re always dumping things in a river somewhere…

There’s always the ANTI-CSX site…[:P]

As a modern day CSX modeler, I am a bit biased… but I couldnt imagine running those NS locomotives… I need the color of the YN2 and YN3 CSX paint schemes!!!

From a purely romantic viewpoint, I like the sound of Norfolk Southern, a helluva lot better than CSX Corp. Norfolk Southern just sounds more like a railroad. CSX Corp sounds like a stock listing.

Do both. When modelling the present, anything goes. You can run any engine on any train. East coast, west coast,Canadian,Mexican, south, north, its OK.[soapbox]

Yep. It’s all run throughs, all the time. Can’t tell the players without a program.

Since I railfan the NS far more then the CSX I gotta go with NS.

Also back date NS to 90/91 and you can run J-611 and the Class A 1218…

CSX or NS?

SOUTHERN PACIFIC. [swg]

Well, Carl Appel couldn’t decide, either. The result was the Norfolk and Ohio - ran superpower steam from both N&W and Chessie (which hadn’t yet dieselized when the N&O was built.)

In truth, the only honest answer to your question is, “Which one do YOU like better?” Unfortunately, the only person who can answer that question is wearing your boots.

Chuck (modeling Central Japan in September, 1964)

I used to model CSX but I got really frustrated with all the derailments that were occurring on my layout. I switched to modeling Norfolk Southern and haven’t had any derailments since. [:D]

Union Pacific or BNSF

Something out west should be done. a desert region is not a common one and is a good choice.

BUT if I had to choose between CSX or NS I would pick NS because the locos look so nice all black. I do not like the CSX colors. For me the choice is strickly on looks because all railroads do the EXACT SAME THING, They haul goods! Its just a matter of which looks best while doing it thats all. [:D]

You could Model both , Pittsburgh PA, Huntington WV Area and Southern Ohio… Have both lines running across the Ohio river from each other… Also both have large coal operations, And I beleive that they also share some track area to the same minning Operations in West Virgina and PA
