CSX Paint Schemes

I have been trying to figure out the paint schemes on CSX. It seems like they can’t make up their minds. I believe the current scheme is called Dark Future and dates from SD50 8503 painted on Feb 9, 2002. This is dark blue with yellow ends, frame stripe and lettering (white cab roofs ?).
Before this is the scheme I like dating from B36-7 5895 on March 26, 1990 with mostly a gray long hood. This is Bright Future, I believe. When the AC6000CW’s arrived (Sept. 1996 ?) the CSX on the hood had some yellow added. Does this scheme have a name ?
SD40 8420 had a paint scheme from August 1989 which had yellow ends and a blue roof. Bright Stealth ?
During October 1988 GP38-2 2618 was painted gray and this was the Stealth Scheme. Later it received blue on the trucks and fuel tank.
Before this was GP40-2 6344 painted in early May 1986. Is there a name for this scheme ?
The first CSX scheme (one-of-a-kind ?) was GP40-2 6382 dating from April 18, 1986.
Are there specific names for the blue, gray and yellow that have been used ?

the "stealth "scheme is the only name that I’m aware of.csxs paint now is more a throwback to the C&O/B&O engines before the chessie colors.put an engine back in chessie paint it would get alot of attention.

that I know of CSX has 2 Chessie Systems left in the Chessie System paint # 9121 and 9122 I think.

CSX also has a caboose with the chessie system yellow, although its rather rusty. they use it on local switching operations out of holland, michigan.

It’s one of the roads I am interested in / model HO. Thanks for the handy info.

CSX has used 14 paint schemes in its 19 years of existance. Can any other railroad match this? Did the New Haven have this many paint schemes?

dti407-Thank you.
george745-Thank you
espeefoamer-When BNSF reaches 19 years, I’m sure they will be on H46
I’d like to see more threads like this.
Lehigh Valley and the Rock Island had their share of schemes too.

Fourteen paint schemes used by CSX is a bit disingenuous. I’m quite familiar with the website in question and that figure includes such things as Chessie System blue and yellow, Conrail blue, Seaboard System French gray, SCL black, EMD demo colors, etc. It also includes such variations as the yellow ends painted on other schemes.

Conrail could probably come close if you count all the predecessor paint schemes in existence on April 1, 1976 when locomotives began to get relettered and renumbered without being repainted.

BNSF has at least five schemes based on its predecessors colors: three from BN and two from ATSF.

CSX’s newest paint scheme is the “Dark Future”. It is dark blue with a yellow nose and rear. It has a yellow border stripe and yellow letters and numbers. It’s from 2002.

CSX’s second oldest paint scheme is basically the old “stealth” scheme with added yellow on the nose and rear. No blue is on it though. It was seen first I believe around 1998.

CSX’s third oldest were the scheme for the CSX “AC6000CW” in which was gray with blue slanting down over the cab and along the bottom with yellow side sills, nose and rear. It also has yellow letters and numbers. This is called “Bright Future”. Released in 1996.

CSX’s forth oldest I believe was the " new image" which was like the AC6000CW only with blue letters. First became popular in 1987.

CSX’s fifth oldest, I believe, was the “CSX Transportation” paint scheme which had a gray-almost shiney light blue tone with dark, dark blue letters. CSX Transportation was written on the side. The entire locomotive’s roof was dark blue and it wrapped down to the subbases. Numbers were gray. I think it was released in 1985, so says my CSX loco roster book.

CSX’s sixth oldest was the “stealth” with complete light, light gray and dark, dark, blue letters and numbers. Released in 1980.

I believe that CSX still owns a C & O SD40 number 4617. It also owns a couple of Chessie System units. BQ units in Family Lines paint were scrapped. Since the Conrail split, CSX now owns Conrail and leased power. Some leasers were patched: EMD SD70MAC demo. So, thats all that I know about CSX’s paint schemes.

OH, how could I have forgot about the “pumpkin” paint scheme on their “Maintenance of Way” units in which I believe came around in 1995. These were all orange with black letters and numbers.

And CSX has had almost as many rule books over the same period of time…CSX dates from Nov. 1 1980, CSX Transportation has been an entitiy for 19 years.

I like that CSX Dark future Scheme. I have to agree that the BNSF has got realy sloppy with their Repaints lately. Allan.

What are you talking about? Their repaints are the coolest! I love all 3 “heritages” and love the patched units! BNSF’s new logo is pretty cool, although the name is stupid, “Powerbar”. But this scheme became the new “Heritage 3”. Unit 7695 is okay but I think that it’s logo should be dark green like the rest. Otherwise, all of BNSF’s schemes are excellent! You are right about the “Dark Futures” though! They rock! [8D]

alstom I have to agree with you here the new BNSF paint scheme is awsome, I really do like the way the lettering is painted on the background. To me it sends a good message, that BNSF is looking into the future. hehehe

I have found some very interesting CSX paint schemes. One of them is CSX’s “Diversity in Motion” This paint scheme is basicly a Bright Future unit w/o the yellow CSX lettering on the sides, instead there is a " white background patch that says “Diversity” and then in little black lettering it says “In Motion”. I personally don’t care for it. This paint scheme was put on some of the AC6000CW’s that CSX owns, now I think the units that were formerly “Diversity units” are now in CSX bc2 paint otherwise known as Bright Future.

One of these “Diversity in Motion” paint schemes are on a AC4400CW. I’m not sure of the number though. The two “Diversity in Motion” AC6000CWs are 5000 and 5001. They have been patched. They were formerly “Bright Futures” with yellow letters.

alstom that is interesting I have to look that one up. I could of sworn that the Diversity in Motion scheme was applyed to only a few AC6000CWs.

Would it KILL them to bring back the Chessie silhouette?

Would it “KILL” them to bring back a; “C & O For Progress” Herald ?;Probably!
