CSX pre-employment test(welder-helper)

what are the math and reading test like? what type of drug test(urine, hair or blood)? what type of strength test?

what type of drug test(urine, hair or blood)?

There’s a red flag. Does it matter?

As far as strength I believe that, like conductors, 75 pounds is the standard.

Suggestion: Post your question over on the TRAINS Forum as a number of prototype railroaders are regulars there.

Regarding drug test. Not trying to be sarcastic at all, but I certainly hope that you are clean and do not have a drug or alcohol problem. The U.S railroad and transit industry is more wary than ever of abusers and “potential” abusers. If you’re a heavy drinker or like to get high or drunk partying, then the railroad industry might not be the direction you want to take unless you’re very serious.

I worked at a transit system for 15 years and welding was one of my duties. It was and still is unionized. Policies were similar to the railroad industry and Amtrak. Random drug tests anytime. Usually urine. Blood tests performed following a major accident or mishap. The computer in HR would randomly select employees for testing. I was popped twice in one month. No big deal for me as I was always clean. Several coworkers that I really liked were eventually fired because of drug or drinking habits.

If you make it to the job inteview level, let the interviewer know that you have a high regard for safety at all times.

No doubt![(-D] I think THAT cat’s out of the bag!

i was a signal maintainer on the new york city transit for 31 years. we were subject to random drug screening for several periods during our workday. mainly they used urine sampling and occasionally they also used a breatholizer to test for alcohol. since we were a union shop we were protected from dismisal if there was a positive result as long as we entered drug treatment program and could not work until you did complete it. i retired 9 years ago and was called down for random testing four times in my last year. twice in a two week period. thought they were out to get me. when i was hired the physical qualifying test (besides being able to breath) was doing a standing broad jump of at least 4ft, lift a 45 lb dumbell in one hand and 35 lbs with the other and to climb a ladder 8ft walk along a narrow catwalk and down another ladder. on the test you’ll probably have to know something about welding and general safety rules. remember some illegal and legal drugs remain in your system for sometimes several months. let them know if you have even only taken just an asprine tablet when they do the pre employment screening and have the prescription info with you to show them if your taking something from a doctor.
