CSX Q135

I happened to watch CSX Q135 last night. The train is a Chambersburg ,Pa - Chicago intermodal. All containers were single stacked. There were a few trailers, but for the most part, only single stacked containers.

Why is this not stacked? Looking at the map, the routing would probably be across PA on the B&O line via Sand Patch. Are there tunnel height restrictions on this line?

Solid train with 165 containers/trailers.

There are clearance restrictions between Cherry Run, WV and Willard that prevent the operation of 20’2" Double Stacks…elimination of these restrictions are a part of CSX’s National Gateway Corridor Project (or whatever they are calling it) to permit double stack clearances between Baltimore, West of the Howard Street Tunnel and Portsmouth on the East to Willard & Chicago on the West. I think there are something like 164 clearance projects that have to be completed to make those routes Double Stack operable.

I was hoping BaltACD would provide the informed answer - thank you, sir ! [tup]

What surpised me, though, was that the train apparently originated in Chambersburg, PA. I wasn’t aware that CSX had any kind of intermodal yard there - maybe only some interchanges or connections with the former RDG or WM lines there, portions of which might be or now connect to NS instead. So I must be missing out on something here - anybody know what ? Thanks in advance.

The Chambersburg Ramp was opened about a year and a half to two years ago. It was opened to tap the traffice from the numerous Distribution Centers that have opened in the Harrisburg area. Since Harrisburg it s NS facility CSX got as close as they could. I understand NS is now in the process of building a competing facility in Greencastle, PA.

BaltACD is correct about the NS Greencastle facility – construction is underway. Some might wonder why NS is building another facility so “close” to Harrisburg. It is part of the NS Crescent Corridor Project and is designed to take some of the truck congestion off Rte 81 around Harrisburg. Rail traffic is really picking up through Hagerstown for both CSX and NS as a result of both projects.

I s that the nice new facility right in the middle of nowhere, just off I-81? I was surprised to see it there the summer of 2008.

Here’s a link to a handy-dandy CSX System Clearance Map for its Doublestack Routes, last revised 12-18-2009 (11’’ x 17’’ size, approx. 400 KB in size in this ‘PDF’ format version):

As you’ll see, it is conveniently color-coded to distinguish between the various ‘‘ALLOWABLE EQUIPMENT SIZE CAPABILITY’’ maximum heights, as follows (note that some of those computer-generated font numerals are kinda hard to read . . . [%-)]):

csx is building a new intermodal yard in North Baltimore Ohio.Ns is working on another intermodal project in its airline yard in toledo. The news reported that ODOT could be looking at expanding I-75 in the future as well. stay safe Joe
