I know the difference between a YN2 and YN3 paint scheme, but what does “YN” stand for? Yellow Nose? And was there a YN1?
Yes, the “YN” does stand for Yellow Nose, and yes, there was a YN1. It resulted when CSX decided to repaint their solid-grey “Stealth” engines with yellow noses for greater visibility.

Here’s a great CSX site. Look under the photos section. They have pics of all the different paint schemes and list the paint codes. Great site site to look for loco details.(you may have to turn your pop up blocker off)
[#ditto]…and if you have one of those popup blockers that’s difficult or impossible to turn off, here is their “no frills” link - just straight HTML: http://www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/html/nojava.html
