(took these 30 minutes ago on CSX mainline right across street from my work; not photo shopped at all)
Great Pictures!
Before you know it, we will be hearing that the RR is switching to giant universal motors on their engines! [;)]
Regards,
John
The motors used with 25-hertz locomotives, like the GG1, and 16 2/3-hertz European locomotives were universal motors, identical in principle to Lionel and other toy-train motors!
I notice that they have even tried a different color on the 3rd rail to disguse it like MTH, Atlas, and Gargraves!
great pics David. Are you sure that is just “grass?”
TomS
That’s not grass. It is cleverly disguised stud rail that they are testing on the adjacent track.
Looks like a hopper car was trailing seeds!

Hey guys,
On my VRE trip home last night I noticed the rails being replaced. Dated from before the US entry into WWII !!! 1940. The rusty center rail pictured above in this post is replacing this 1940-era rail on the BUSY CSX mainline.
Sure wish I had about a million acres of land. I’d like to use that old rail to make my own railroad.
I guess they remelt it?
This is one photo. On the first photo, it is normal. The second same photo was cropped in and I used contrast filter in photoshop to bring out the date.
Actually, they’ll probably sell it to a shortline. Lots of those little roads out there are running on rail even older.
That is funny. Thanks for sharing that with us. Now we can go to the HO guys and say “Hey, there is actually a prototype for our 3 rail track.”
London Underground? Washington, DC? Bordeaux?
