CSX YN3 paint

What color is the best match for CSX YN3 Blue?

I’ve always thought it looked very close to C&O Enchantment Blue. In fact that paint scheme reminds me of their yellow-nosed GP30’s, GP/SD35’s and SD40’s during the early Sixties.

I haven’t acquired or painted any YN3’s on my roster yet, I’m doing early 1990’s.

Floquil (enamel)/PollyScale(acrylic) actually has a CSX Blue shade available for the Dark Future scheme.

I would start with that, and mix in a few drops of other colors to get it to match the blue CSX lettering decals you will be applying to the nose and hood ends of the engine.

Ditto the Dark Future Yellow… Both Floquil and PollyScale has a Dark Future Yellow shade available. You will also need to mix in some other colors to get it to match the big yellow CSX billboard letter decals that goes on the hood sides.

Hope this helps.

OOOPS disregard my earlier post, Floquil now has their own YN3 Blue:

Thanks for the help. I was unaware that they were making that color.

Any updates on the paint match for dark future? The Polly Scale blue and yellow claimed to be YN3 just do not look right. The yellow is not even close to the Microscale decals. The decal sheet itself references Model Flex Mo Pac blue and NP Yellow as the best colors.

Any one have any insight before I paint a bunch of locos?

Look closer…That is GOLD not CSX Yellow…

You need CSX New Image Gold.

Floquil/Polly Scale 414394

I typed yellow but you are right, the paint says “New Image Gold”. But it is no where close to the Gold on the decal sheet. Checking my photos, the CSX lettering on the 1:1 scale locomotives looks yellow as do the ends. Actually looks like C & O caboose yellow more than gold.

I agree it looks more like C&O yellow after the paint starts to fade…

Also,The Floquil/Polly Scale YN3 Gold doesn’t match the Gold Atlas uses as I found out when I painted the handrails on my GP15-1s…

As if this hobby were not complex enough. We need a gold standard…

I am writing Senator McCain to convene a special committee on YN3 color matches. Or, I’ll just change to Penn Central. Black being black, and all.

The 3 SD’s I have painted with the Poly-Scale colours are almost a perfect match to my Athearn ,ATLAS,and KATO factory painted locos.

That gold is definately gold.

If you want to use up already purchased paint (like I did)

4:1 Floquil Light Blue and Engine Black

1:1 TTX Yellow and Reefer Yellow

The blue is a seriously funky color to rope in, I would recommend buying that one. Also in the pictures I had of the AC4400’s I did the yellow lettering was darker than the nose color, they may use Scotchbrite or some night visibility material.

But as mentioned above, you still may need to doctor the paint to the decal color.

Funny that this topic just came up since today I was at my LHS and picked up some decals and paint to do up my Kato SD40-2 with working ditchlights (I was going to paint to MRL #250 but ended up just purchasing Athearn’s one)

The paint that I found is Polly Scale CSX New Image Gold # F414394 and Polly Scale CSX New Image Blue # F414393

Now the guy said that they were the colors so I hope that he was right. Do you guys know?

I have the two bottles of paint that I use for my “NEW IMAGE” CSX units setting in front of me and they are #414394 for the gold and #414393 for the blue.
