Daneville & Donner River on DVD

Hi,

Has anyone got this DVD. Is it any good? Is it worth getting?

It’s availabe from http://www.modeljunction.info/

“Come along on this rail fan tour, starting in the relative cool of the Donner River Canyon with its rugged terrain, sweeping curves, bridges and tunnels where we will watch heavy trains struggle with the grades.Observe modern high horsepower locomotives from the Union Pacific,BNSF and Norfolk Southern hauling long trains of Double-Stacks,Mixed Manifests and Coal Hoppers through spectacular scenery. We then move to the dusty desert town of Daneville. You can almost imagine the heat and taste the dust. Let’s watch the many trains passing through town, and the local switcher at work. We will then continue West to the Duolith Cement plant, the largest industry in the area, and watch the company Switcher shuffle cement hoppers. Look out for the ‘cameo’ scenes along the way. Take time to enjoy the scenery and the outstanding ‘weathering’ on the Locomotives and Rolling Stock.”

Thanks

Paul

It was talked about on another forum. Unfortunately, it was made for the European market and is formatted to that standard…25 frames per second. There was talk about the other forum;s parent company trying to convert it but didn’t sound promising. But if you are over there, it should be worth your while as is all of Pelle’s stuff - IMHO. (His Done in a Day book is the best book Kalmbach has put out . http://www.kalmbachstore.com/12458.html).

I would love to see it though… or another one on it.

If you need more, drop me a note and I can get you to the other forum

The formatting decision doesn’t seem that smart business wise. I would think that the cost of expanding to more universal formats would more than be made up by the gain in international sales. I for one would buy a copy in a heartbeat if I was sure it would play for me on my equipment. Just speculation, as we don’t have information on the thought process behind the decision.

I did hear that PSP 2 and 3, as well as some computers can play PAL format here in the states so you maight want to try that. I also found this on the video

"The useless Royal Mail postman put a most welcome package through my door at 5.35pm this evening. I’ve just watched Pelle’s DVD and it’s simply stunning - all that I hoped it would be. It’s 55 minutes long and consists mostly of run-pasts of trains through excellent scenery at all locations on his layout, plus a small bit of switching. Most interestingly, there’s absolutely no commentary, and he lets his sound-equipped locomotives provide the only noise - it works fine, and is far superior to the “canned” stuff you get elsewhere. A credit to Loksound, as that’s what he uses.

I have to say what a pleasure it is to be “first” with something related to US model railroading, as it’s usually the American audience that gets first bite at anything! You’ll have to wait a bit longer, just for once…"

Hope this helps ratled

Thanks for the info. It sounds like it is worth getting. Hopefuly it will be out in NTSC for you guys soon.

Paul

When you shoot TV, you have to choose a format, NTSC or PAL, on which to shoot. There is no “universal” format.

We use NTSC, but a lot of Europe uses PAL.

Whichever you pick, you’ll have to convert to the other to reach those customers.

Ahhh… I misspoke. I meant to just say “more formats”. My apologies! [:D]

If only we had somebody in America producing videos about ‘great model railroads’…I’m sure it would be a Keller…oops, I mean a “killer”. [(-D]

I know this is an old thread but wanted to post anyway. I found the thread while trying to find out more about this DVD. I’ve been very interested in seeing the Daneville & Donner River for a while and was excited when I saw that there was a DVD. However, I was then disappointed to see that it was in PAL format.

I decided to order anyway in hopes that it would play on my Mac computer. I came in the mail today so I popped it into the Mac. It played perfectly!!! However, no luck in the BluRay player or the PS3.

Anyway, I watched it on my Mac and really enjoyed it. It’s nothing special, just video of trains running on the layout. No narration, just the sound of the trains themselves which have DCC and Sound.

It was nice to watch them run and be able to take a better look at his structures and scenery. I especially like the scene with the MP15 switching the cement plant. I was able to get some great views of his plant.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know it works on a MacBook Pro computer but not a PS3 or BluRay player.

I look forward to seeing Pelle’s next layout!

Or, you could get a multi-region DVD player which would allow you to play NTSC and PAL DVD’s at will.
