DC loco's on DCC layout.

On my small DC layout I had 7 blocks set up for two controllers, but never had a second power pack hitched up. Connected DCC to the second side. When I want to run DCC, switch all selectors to proper position or can leave a block or two off (center off switches), if I want to park a DC on a siding. It is a small home layout, but allows me to run either my DC or DCC until I am able to convert all locos.

Good luck,

Richard

Frank,

I hear what you are saying, and there is some obvious utility to your suggestion to convert from DC to DCC in the manner you describe. But as Rich has related in his recent post in this thread, there is danger in complicating the system design. Since the OP has stated (if I understand what he wrote) that he is perhaps leaning towards going to a DCC protocol on his next layout, for me personally the KISS principle applies here, and keeping it simple and less complicated in initally wiring things like auto-reversing devices, would be welcome. This is one of those things that is fascinating about this hobby – the infinite number of ways to design and operate your ideas.

Wilton.

Guys, Thanks to all for the feedback. Based on the majority of the feedback discouraging the use of DC locos on a DCC layout, I believe I will proceed with building the new layout with DCC. The layout will be about 13’ x 19’ so it will take quite sometime before I’m ready to run any trains. As I go I will begin decoder instalation on a few of my favorites and eventually get most of them done. A couple of them I have had since I was 12 years old or so, I’m 48 now. Though some of those earlier ones have some sentimental value, they where primarily on the cheap side and may not be worth converting. Those may just go into a display case. Again thanks for all of your comments and suggestions. Vernon

Wilton,

I think, maybe people, took what I was trying to explain, the wrong way, or it could have been my explaination. Wire it for a DCC layout, but with a DC theme, have the main BUSS, isolated, with say, 5 blocks, or in DCC terms, power districts, would also make it easier to trouble shoot, if the need arise’s, then when comes time to switch, either connect the blocks, or leave them, as they are. One thing I learned, after being in HO, 62yrs, is I avoid, any and all reversing sections, like the plague, in DCC it’s easy, with the AR’s, not so with DC. The layout I have now, is 25x40, last one for me, it is set up, for three cab control, but I am usually the only operator, the Grandkids, some times. Most of my friends who did operate with me are gone, but such is life. This layout also has no grades, all flat, it just looks like there are grades, I went down, with scenery, rather, than up, less, problem’s that way. Like I said earlier, If I was 30 yrs younger, I would be in DCC, not necessarily for the sound, but for the ease of wiring, with 55 blocks, on my layout, you probably know how much wiring was invlved, but back then I enjoyed it and still do, simply because it works.[:D][:D] Have Fun! While You Can.

Cheers, [D]
