I am modeling in HO and recently purchased a Model Power DCCready metal loco. I was wondering about what kind of a decoder to put in it. I want one with sound, are the decoders universal or do I need to get one especially for the Moder Power? This is my first attempt at DCC, so go easy. Thanks. Mike
No any brand will work, although some are better than others. Best to call Tony’s Train Exchange of Litchfield station and give then your model info and let them suggest one.
Sound is a little trickier and has a lot to do with fit–both the decoder and speaker. This may easily cost you more than the Model Power loco is worth. You have to make that decision.
If it’s a metal body Model Power loco, it’s an F7. Should be ample room for the decoder.
Mike, SpaceMouse is on the target.
One additional note.
When you go to either Tony’s or Litchfield’s websites, there are links that you can click on that give you a thorough breakdown on DCC. Download these and study them before jumping right into it.
Here’s one link that works:
http://www.litchfieldstation.com/university/html/wiring.html
When you get there, you can click on the little rectangular boxes that read: What is DCC and then, DCC wiring.
Hope this is helpful.[8D][:D]
