This is really a useless project - a lot is different, and the Athearn bodies are too wide to start with. As an exercise to test you kitbashing skills it is a good project to cut your teeth on. Good Luck!

That looks like if it went through a fire.
it was the lifelike 8000 gal tank hit a track nail

Hello Budliner.
There’s no easy answers. I remember the previous thread discussing this.
One of the posters on that thread indicated that the prototype DDA40X is longer than the “never built” prototype EMD DD40 which Athearn did produce. There are also significant differences in the bodies such as the fans and roof detailing. Would require quite a bit of modifying.
Now, if you don’t mind freelancing you could use an F45/FP45 ( plenty show up on ebay), cut off the cab and adapt it to fit it to your Athearn DD40.
IMHO, the best choice would be to keep an eye out for a Bachmann DDA40X and give it a complete paint makeover as well as a repowering project.
Hey Budliner,
I do not think you can easily build a DD40AX from an Athearn DD40. However, It does make a credible stand in for the earlier DD35As withouth forking out the expense of Brass.
James.
wow your right it is wide
it looks funny

how can you trust Athearn they let me down
buchmann wins this one
