Good Day,
Swafford’s imagination at work… How about a DD70ACe? Attached for your review is what I think a 21st Century DD35A would look like. Pure “Fantasy” but I like it! The drawing that I present today was created by extensive modifications from a Michael Eby drawing at Trainiax.
What if EMD produced a 21st Century DD35A!!!
Curious, would you buy a fantasy engine like this?
Regards,
Swafford
Nice engine, looks beliveable. Wayy too much horseys for my railroad though. W’re excited for the 2100HP gensets over the 1500HP SD7s, We wouldn’t know what to do with 8k worth of Horseys…
Think it needs some more radiator area and soem more equipment bays to handle a compelte duplicate set of alternators and AC control eqipment.
On the practical side - were the 6000HP AC6000’s downrated because of prime mover reliability or simply because they really couldn;t get their feet under them? A DD70 is adding just 2 more axles to handle an extra 4000HP. Despite the latest in AC controls, ground radar, and all the other anti-slip systems, I kind of think such a loco would have a hard time putting down maximum tractive effort.

Geez next your going to be showing up here with a B-B + B-B GE ES unit. Wouldn’t the DD70 be 8600hp though? I thought the prime movers were 4300 ‘horseys’.
Swafford,
I found this drawing pretty interesting (& enjoy yout paint scheme ones too). I had fun comparing & trying to find out what was modified on this drawing.
However, (I hope not to offend anyone), some of the responses confused me a bit, & hope you may be able to clarify some of the specs.
To me, it looks like it is an ACe that had a few more cylinders added in the prime mover, & then had D-D trucks added to better provide adheasion qualities. It didn’t look ‘to me’ like a twin engine/alternator design, like the original DD35 & 40 series. ( I could be wrong, but I really studied the drawing). If that is the case, I think this would be much more feasable than a unit the length of a twin engined machine would be.
I’d be interested if I have understood the basis of your design drawing. Thanks for sharing it!
Good Day,
In my mind this DD70ACe would have only one engine. Perhaps SD100ATC would be a better fit. Advanced Traction Control
On a side note, I have already created the General Electric ES55AC. Competition is always a good thing.

Swafford
Thanks,
I liked the artistic way you followed past EMD design practices (SD45ish) & incorporated that into this one.
It looks like somthing NS and UP would want. but it looks like a normal SD70ACe with 8 axles. dont get me wrong its still awesome.
Reminds me of a pic I saw years ago that somebody made of (if I remember right) a “DD80MAC”, which was a photoshop of two Union Pacific SD80MACs spliced back to back into one huge locomotive. Used to have the pic saved on one of my PCs at home but haven’t been able to find it for a long time.

I would try scratch building one if we had dimensions. Body lenght, over coupler faces, truck length and truck centers, etc.
I wouldn’t call that a DD70ACe…I’d call it a SD100MAC
Still, nice design, looks like a cross between a SD70ACe cab, SD80MAC hood and radiatior setup, the trucks from a DD40AX, and the tunnel motor for a SD45T-2. Nice model, sure beats any locomotive as of yet…
