Decision Problems

Hello,

I am planning an N-scale Layout on a shelf 20’ x 1’, I feel like I have enough space, but I can’t make up my mind on anything, era, setting, etc.,I would like to do a modern layout but I can’t figure out a track plan, I want to have plenty of operations. Could someone help me decide on a plan?[:I]

Try the Atlas site. It apparently has several posted from which you can chose.

If you could add another 6" in depth to your layout, even in N, you might open up a much wider array of potential layout schemes. Your length sounds great, but even in N scale, one foot limits you somewhat. That is, unless all you want to model is a yard with parallel tracks. It can keep you plenty involved and busy, but…kind of unidimensional if you ever want to have some variety at times. Just my opinion.

Thank you for your response, I have another question.
I have a few standard line turnouts, but they appaear to be curved on both sides. Could I straighten them in any way, or should I get different turnouts?

Take this for what it is worth: I have never used curved turnouts, and have never read on this forum of anyone successfully straightening one…or even thinking about it.

Sorry I ran out of gas on this one.

Edit- Come to think of it, I believe that curved turnouts are ideal when space is limited…so,…

Please make sure they are curved turnouts and not a WYE turnout. Corved saves space and wye’s help in turning trains or splitting routes.
