I just found out that the Canadian government will under a stimulus plan be giving grants to homeowners for renovations.

At present I have a 12’ x 8’ layout in the family room on the main level.

The basement of the home is totally unfinished, with only the furnaces and hot water tanks being the only use if the basement until now. I hesitated to build a layout as there is just too much dust and the light and electrical is not adequate.

I was planning renovations anyway, but now with this plan I can now have a significant portion of the basement finished for a model railroad room at no real cost to me. I will certainly need the portion I will save just to build the benchwork and buy the track and scenic materials .

Gee, its just like Christmas, now to find a contractor.

Did not you receive a cheque from the government under the Stimulus Package legislation?

Yes and No. I received a federal grant for college tuition. I will not qualify for any government tax credits because I am not a home owner. Improvements that qualify for tax credits have make the home more energy efficient like replacing windows and adding more insulation.
