Delaware & Hudson Railway in the 1980's

Photography by Barry Trogu

In my travels with Ed Kaspriske and our kids along with the business trips I took in the 1980’s, I saw many D&H locations. This is my photo album of those times.

Our kids were with us when we went to Binghamton, NY for a weekend in August 1984. Other times I was in Binghamton for some telecom installations and went Conklin Yard.

Guilford was a player in those days and Guilford lettered engines were appearing in many locations in this time frame. We did see some engines lettered for Boston & Maine and Maine Central. Variety!

I always had my cameras with me on these business trips. I enjoy scenery so when I see a scene of something of interest, I take a photo of it.

New York State

A picturesque dairy farm in NY State outside of New Delhi, NY. In those days, there was no easy route to get to Cooperstown, NY where my client’s oil company was located. The trip took around 5 hours each way to get there and back. I appreciate scenery so I just had to take this photo in August 1977.

I chased the freight and shot it as it was passing the Cersota Flour Mill in New Delhi in August 1977.

On another trip to my client in Vestal, NY, I stopped by the Conklin Yard to get some photos. D&H #756 & #761 in pusher service for Belden Hill in Conklin Yard in Binghamton, NY on a cold day in. February 1982.

On a bur business trip to a client in Pennsayvania, I stopped by the Delaware & Hudson yard in Green Ridge near Scranton, PA in October 1979.

In March 1980, Ed Kaspriske, Paul Wilson and myself went on a trip to Scranton, PA. We started in the Allentown, PA yard and found a D&H freight hearing north. My photos start in Allentown on that overcast day.

Binghamton,NY 1984

Ed and I took our kids for a weekend adventure on the D&H. We got to Binghamton on a Friday night and camped out under the Interstate bridge. Since it started to rain, this was a great location that kept us dry. Saturday was much better and we camped at Belden, NY near the Belden tunnel.

We camped under the bridge, ate dinner and slept in our vans. Left to right - Ed K, ron K, Barry Sr and Barry Jr at Binghamton, NY in August 1984.

On Saturday, we woke up to the sound of the New York, Susquehanna & Western diesel switching the yard.

Sunday Morning was a bit overcast and later became a sunny one with the overcast morning burned off by the sun. The morning started off quiet, but as the day grew longer, we were able to chase a few trains.

As we were eating breakfast, we heard about a set of U33-C helpers with #755 heading south to Binghamton. I went to the Belden Hill Road crossing and took this photo. We left our campsite and heard about a northbound train at the Tunnel. We went to Walling Road which allowed me to take a photo in the the morning haze.

This is a view of a north freight from Walling Road above the Belden Tunnel on the foggy Sunday morn in August 1984. We tried to catch this train but could not!

We traveled further north and were in Sidney, NY when over the scanner we heard about a south bound freight. We chased that train south.

We caught up to the train in Unadilla, NY.

Although it looks forlorn and forgotten, I loved the architectural details on the Unadilla station. How often do you see an ‘eyebrow’ on the roof!

What is the horn setup on your van?

Do you know the disposition of Ed’s horn collection?

My truck had a set of International truck horns. A compressor and a rank with an E-8 handle to pull the valve.

I used to converse with Ed’s son Ron,but I lost contact over the past few years. He never said what happened to Ed’s horn collection. I knew he had friends that used to have a horn honk at Horseshoe Curve, but I do not who the members were.

I attached a photo of one of Ed’s horns.

Ask around, maybe someone knows what happened.

I believe some of his sign collection was tossed, I asked about the Public Service round sign that used to be in the buses in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. Ron kind of indicated that things went into storage, but he thought his other son George might of thrown it away. George never knew the value of Ed’s stuff!

This is one of Ed’s horns back in 1988.

I checked with some the guys (usn’s who are still kicking) and no one knows what happened. A couple of us had lost contact with his son Ron a few years ago.

One guy said Ed belonged to a group of horn collectors, he did not know the group’s name. There are a few of those groups, you might want to research those.

Someone is selling Ed’s negatives in Ebay. No one has any idea who it is. I have a few of his early 1968 to 1970 negs.

Good luck!

You mean like one of these?

It is close, but the triangle had the words “ELECTRIC. GAS, TRANSPORTATION”

I took a photo of that a few years ago on a classic Public Service Bus. I have to find the photo in my collection and send it.

Interesting! “Electric, Gas, Transportation” are what each side of the triangle stands for but I’ve never seen a Public Service logo lettered like that. I’ve got two books featuring Public Service trolleys and the logos look just like the one I posted, and in fact I’m old enough to remember Public Service buses and work trucks with the plain logo. I’m going to have to do a little research and see if I can find the one you describe.
I’m not old enough to remember the trolleys but for what it’s worth this is what the buses I remember looked like:

Enjoyed these photos.

Like you I always took my camera with me on my sales calls in Chicago, “downstate” Illinois, St. Louis, and Iowa. My most memorable photo(s) were at Ridgely Tower in Springfield, Il shortly before it closed down. The operator invited me up and I stayed for about 45 minutes before heading out to see a customer.

ed

I don’t remember where I have seen it, my pix of the buses have the round logo that you sent me.

Unless I had a dream, I do remember seeing those words. My mom worked for PSEG for 30 years, so perhaps I saw that when I was much younger in the late 1950’s.

Memory is a terrible thing to lose!!!

Maybe in one of the offices as a wall decoration?
But what a coincidence, my favorite uncle worked for Public Service for 30 years as well in the electrical division. I grew up in Bergen County NJ and we NEVER had a power failure while Uncle John was on the job!

My mom worked in customer service at 80 Albany St in New Brunswick. I visited her many times back then. Maybe that is were I saw the round logo with the words. Dang, I wish I had gotten that one that Ed Kaspriske had. He was a truck driver then operated the Condor crane…BIG, big crane!!!

Ed and I went to the Edison sub station and I got my photo take in the White tractor. I think that was a White Road Boss.

When Memorial Parkway was being torn apart for the new Route 18 construction, I took a photo of the PSEG power station. It is all history now!!!

And then, in 1974, PSEG constructed the power poles above the Penn Central tracks. I know I had to take a few photos of that operation!

Since he was a lineman needless to say we never saw Uncle John in the office, BUT every once in a while when we were out riding around on errands we’d see him with a crew doing line work.
My wife, then my fiancé, saw him doing line work between her and a neighbors house! She had to run inside and take her mother out to meet him!

I can also remember a Public Service Corp logo with words in the triangle, but not the context – it would be pre-1928, wouldn’t it?

I think it would have to be pre-1928, the research I’ve been able to manage only goes as far back at the 1930s and the triangle with words isn’t evident.
