Has anyone tried using Delta Ceramcoat acrylic paints on styrene stuctures and if so how did it turn out?. Are there any preparations prior to painting that you found worked better than other methods? Would appreciate any input
It works full strength pretty well. Diluted craft paint doesn’t like to stick to foam or plastic. You have to be a little more careful when you handle the buildings. It doesn’t turn out rock hard like Polly Scale does but for the money you can’t beat it.(it doesn’t work in an airbrush very well)
Just make sure you wash all the parts real good with some Dawn dish soap first. I might try that plastic adhesion promoter spray paint first next time.
The Apple Barrel and Anita’s brands work about the same and are half the price of the Delta Coat.
Hi Loathar,
I’ve got to disagree with you regarding Delta Ceramcoat not working well if diluted. I use Delta paints for all my needs and use their thinner to dilute the paint when brushing and it sticks fine to plastic. In fact, if you dilute it a little, about 50/50, you don’t get the brush marks on the finished product. I usually brush on a light first coat and when dry, do the finish coat.
Regarding airbrushing…all I use in my airbrush is Delta Ceramcoat paints, again diluted with their thinner. A lot of people don’t know that Delta makes an acrylic thinner…and it says on the bottle that it’s formulated for airbrushing. I dilute the paint to the consistency of milk, just like the consistency of Badger paints that come ready to use in your airbrush.
Hope this helps.

I use it all the time. Most of the time, I prime the structures with Krylon Gray Primer first. It evens out any repair work I’ve done, and provides more tooth for the craft paint to grab. Some examples…

I have had good luck with it and you can’t beat the price…Cox 47
Maybe with their thinner. And also, plastic and styrene are two different things. I tried some diluted with washer fluid and water and it just beaded up on a styrene building I was doing. Same thing worked fine on plastic. Just like plastic glue won’t hold styrene worth a darn.
To all you grat people who replied to my original posting I say a hearty thank you and wish you all a great weekend…Michael
I use a variety of the craftstore paints for the mortar on my buildings. Works great! I’ve also used them to paint trim, but seem to have better luck using the model type paints.
