Looks like UP’s double tracking project on the Sunset Line is starting to bear fruit. Grading is proceeding East of Deming and new rail was being ballasted West of Deming. The line is still congested. In 2 hours we passed 7 trains holding in sidings across New Mexico.

Deming, Lordsville, and Van Horn rock! I love driving I-10!!!
Well actually I don’t. I hate it. But the trainwatching is great.

In 1948 we were heading west from Houston to California in our non-air conditioned '47 Dodge. We had spent the night in a rather basic “motor court” on the west side of Deming. The Espee mainline was about 300 yards away and as I stepped out the door with my Kodak box camera in hand the Sunset Limited was pounding its way west. I took a photo but was of course disappointed when the resulting print showed a subject that was so small that you couldn’t tell what it was.
Back in those pre Russelburger days the Espee took pride in its passenger trains and during our ensuing trip west, the company had erected a number of billboards asking just how you were enjoying your sweltering ride and suggesting that the next time you take a relaxing air conditioned ride on the train. By 2pm even my cash conserving mother was in complete agreement with that suggestion. 110 degrees was about the limit.

Even in a air-conditioned Suburban with XM radio and a DVD player for the kids…I’d still rather take a train…
