Details are very sketchy right now… A CN freight on the Iowa Branch derailed between 4 and 7 cars @ 2 hrs ago in Glendale Heights, IL. Intial reports indicate that one train was involved. There are no further details at this time.
I just happen to work approx 4-5 miles west of the accident site. The building that I work in actually backs up to the CN line. I work the 2nd Shift and I left at a little past 11 tonight . I didn’t hear about the derailment until I was over half way home, otherwise I might have checked it out. Also, before I heard about the derailment on the radio, I was sitting at a red light in Carol Stream and a W Chicago Fire Department ladder truck went by. Maybe it wasn’t related, then again they were heading in the general direction of the derailment and they were in a big hurry.
I will provide more details if they are made available.
Thanks,
CC
Couldn’t have been too serious, Chris–I was almost stopped by an eastbound train on that line at Elmhurst at 6:00 a.m. today.
Officials (in general) made it sound a lot worse than it really was. The news reports (from CLTV) early this morning indicated that originally a gas leak was feared. Seven cars jumped the tracks - no hazmat/chemicals involved. A simple derailment that rattled some local residents. I’m guessing that they pushed the cars out of the way a laid down some panel track (if needed). I don’t know what time they reopened the line. Carl, it might have been possible that the train you almost had to wait for was this morning was the remaining portion of the train that derailed. That’s just a guess though.

Hmmm–that would be a possibility. I should have stayed and watched it (on my way to work, though). Probably wouldn’t have been able to figure anything from that.
