Des Moines Northern & Western Railroad

A long-time business associate collects old stock certificates. He has acquired a stock certificate issued in 1895 to G. M. Dodge (late of transcontinental RR fame). He would like to know more about the railroad and if it ever became operational. The certificate was cancelled in 1898. Thanks for any info.

It was either started by or acquired by the Milwaukee Road. It ran north through Fonda, Iowa. I would guess the south end was Des Moines and the north end was Spencer.

North end was Spirit Lake. About 7 miles of the Spenser-Spirit Lake line still exists in really poor shape going north out of Spenser.(Remains of Milwaukee engine house still in a lumber yard in Spirit Lake)

Thanks for the information. My associate was actually raised in Iowa but was not familiar with that area.
