Lots of political mumbo-jumbo with an objective of garnering taxpayer dollars which cannot be truly justified from an economic point of view.
Is this service really needed?
This is the kind of agreements that need to be worked out between both the public and private sectors. And for once, I can credit a republican, Los Angeles Supervisor michael Antonovich for assisting in putting this proposal together. Let’s break some ground and get this thing built now!
So they give this scheme a new name. Will a new name make any difference to its feasibility or acceptance? Unlikely. Ever since Amtrak dropped the Desert Wind in the late 90’s, we’ve had the absurd situation of two of the nation’s premier tourist destinations with no train service linking them. This all seems like a no-brainer, but it will take a very long time to have it happen. Why the first step, reinstating a train traveling at usual speeds, isn’t being proposed is a mystery. That should not be so difficult to do. Then start the talk of a high-speed corridor.
