Detailing and Weathering

Are there any websites other than the fallenflags.org site that will show some good photos for detailing and weathering etc. I am interested in photos of locos, rolling stock, street crossings etc. Thanks alot everyone!!!

Yes,

My personal favorite is http://www.railpictures.net

Hundreds of thousands of photos of U.S and international railroad locos, cars, m.o.w, stations, etc.)

In addition to the pre-selected searches of locomotives, if you’re looking for something unusual that’s not offered on the locomotive search list, just type it in on the “Key Word” box and hit “Find the Photos”.

I did a while back when a railfan on the TRAINS forum stated he was looking for photos of the GE U50. The loco selection didn’t list it, but yet by going through the key word option, there were a couple of nice shots of those giants.

Hope this helps![:)][:D][tup]

What time period? There are literally THOUSANDS of rail-related photo sites online, and tens of thousands more that are non-rail-related, but are nonetheless very useful in context.

For the transition and steam-era modelers out there, possibly the single best photo guide is the Charles Cushman color photo collection:
http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/cushman/index.jsp
30,000+ color slides of everyday live in the USA and Mexico from about 1940-1960, mostly around the Chicago and San Francisco areas. This site is a must see for anyone modelling postwar urban areas, and is one of the best photo collections online (surpassing the Library of Congress’ 500,000+ image database in many ways).

For pre WWI-era reference material, you can’t beat the Erie RR depot collection at Syracuse University:
http://libwww.syr.edu/digital/images/e/ErieRailroad/#images
Hundreds of glass-plate negatives showing what depot areas REALLY looked like from the 1880s and 1890s (and up through about 1914). This is a must-see for anyone modelling the early steam era.

The University of Wisconsin has a huge and fantastic collection of images online concentrating on everyday life in the upper Midwest:

One of the best online photo collections (apart from the LoC and the Cushman collection) is at the Denver Public Library:
http://photoswest.org/
Ignore the fact that the site is “PhotosWEST”. There are thousands of east-of-the-Mississippi photos in the site.

Here’s a couple more you might try:

Don’t forget the different web sites of the different historical societies for the RR you are interested in. The following link is to the public gallery of the Burlington Route
