DHL Commercial and diesle smoke

Not too long ago, I posted a topic asking about the cause and effect of excessive amounts of diesle smoke in engines.

I just saw a DHL commercial where a UPS and a Fed Ex. driver met at a rail crossing where a California and Arizona (I am not sure about this name, I really should look that up, as I might have the name slightly wrong) train carrying DHL trucks went through the crossing.

Did anyone else notice how much white smoke was coming out of the California and Arizona engines. I seem to remember a Trains article noting that the California and Arizona motive power consisted of rebuilt SD-45s.

The smoke was so bad, I thought it might be artificially enhanced for the effect in the commerical.

Any thoughts?

I have not seen this commercial in few weeks now. I don’t remember the diesel exhaust being overwhelming but I think the lighting of that shot may have made it seem worse.

The locomotives probably weren’t warmed up. My friend Rob Dickson is a good locomotive guy for the Arizona & California RR, I think he is on top of any problems with his fleet.

Randy and Mark,

Your comments seem speak to my suspicion, i.e. that the smoke seemed so heavy that it had to be artificial.

Mark, you have good eyes. I only saw the commerical once and didn’t catch enough of the locomotive to tell if it was even a four or six-axle unit, much less a GP-30. I don’t think I even had time to spot the GP-30’s distinctive hump on its roof (I am thinking of the right model, right?) I just knew of the SD-45 having been rebuilt for that railroad.

And by the way…
The commerical obviously worked, you remembered it, didn’t you?

I love train commercials–except for NS commericals.

When the 611 came through my hometown in Illinois when I was young we happened to be having our homecoming parade.

It was so cool, all 4-5000 people abandoned the parade route to watch the 611–leaving the people in the parade with a kind of wierd feeling. Given that probably 4 or 5 of the 5000 were true rail fans, it was truly a sight to behold.

I would be willing to bet that those same 5000 people change the chanel when an NS commercial comes on.

I so miss the 611. Darn lawyers . . . .

Speaking of train commercials, has anyone seen the Coors beer commercial about where they talk briefly about how Coors’ competitors ship their beer in warm railcars while Coor’s ships their in cold railcars because Coors knows you like a cold beer.

Nothing to get real excited about. Dont see much of the way of trains. Just a few box cars speeding on by.

If I recall correctly, I saw it during Monday night football.

And if I may, That was the objective, I liked it too.

Please do,
it was,
and me too!

I don’t think it is part of his fleet anymore. That commercial was probably made last year. The GP30 was still in Fillmore in June and July when I was there. I think FWRY must have bought it. They have a roster and list of jobs on their web page. Unfortunately the roster have not been updated since February 2001 and the job list since sometime in 2003.
