I have a sizeable number of leftover B&O/C&O 40ft coal hoppers, but I’m modeling CSX. Does anybody know if any of the prototype ones survived long enough to be painted with CSX lettering (excluding M.O.W. service)?
Hello Ken,
Did some research and came up with…yes CSX still uses them for phoshate service. To add to this as I’m sure you know ,CSX has a fleet of coke express hoppers ,that are old 40’ hoppers. Below is a link for phoshate serive hoppers.

Thanx Patrick!
Actually, I’m hoping to find out if any 70-ton, 3-bay coal hoppers existed in the early 80’s still in their black paint, with yellow or white CSX lettering on them. As for the Coke Express hoppers - they have extended-height sides, don’t they?

I thought Coke was carried in those tank cars that Athern brings out every third Christmas or so?
Or would it be in Centreflow hoppers?

The “coke” Patrick is referring to is coal that has had the tar and other impurities baked out of it. It is mixed with iron ore in blast furnaces to burn, and thereby aid the ore melting process. It looks similar to coal, except it is more of a grayish color and is less dense. That’s why ‘taller’ hopper cars are sometimes used to carry it.
yes there are i have some models of them and some pics all post the links when i get them. Bowser makes the models.
That’s great Walter, I anxiously await those pics…[:p]
