Dieselized geared steam locomotives

Anyone know how many were done, and if one has managed to survive? Here’s a site about one such locomotive.

I know of at least three conversions besides this one. One Shay in Washington, one in Virginia, and Canadian Forest Products had a similarly converted Climax. But unfortunately, I know little else on this topic.

Edit: And literally seconds after hitting the submit button, I found this. So strike this topic…

Nice looking loco! Almost looks as if it was intended to be that way.

I recall seeing, many years ago, a ‘home brewed’ Shay conversion done at some logging company’s shop. It looked rather like some corrugated tin chicken houses from a poverty-level farm…

It looks like they took a Whitcomb with burned out traction motors, jacked it up at the frame and installed new running gear.

WOW! I never knew that something like this existed. It is like something that Sam Berliner would dreamed up. [:)]

Why God Why? WTF “What The Freak”?

That looks like what would be one of the more conservative designs from the BerlinerWerke - would be interesting to see the Berlinerwerke dieselized enhanced Pacific Coast Shay.

Yes it would, why don’t you tell him!
