Hi gang[:)] Anyone able to tell the difference between EMD’s F40PH and a PH-2 from just the outside appearance? I think internally, it is how the headend power is provided but I expect, that will be debated lol.
Any help would be helpful.

The F40PH-2 was built for Metra and VIA(maybe others). It looks basically like a F40PH. The F40PHM-2 was built for Metra and has the ‘Winnebago’ car body(very short nose). There is a ‘C’ version that has a seperate HEP in the rear end(HEP does not run off of the prime mover).

Hello Julian,
Jim is basically correct, and Gregg McDonnell’s Field Guide to Modern Diesel Locomotives (Kalmbach Books) lists “no major external differences” between the F40PH and the F40PH-2. McDonnell does note, however, that F40PHs built before 1977 have the underbody battery box and air reservoirs ahead of the fuel tank, while those built in '77 and later have the batteries and reservoirs behind the tank. On the Dash 2 version, introduced in 1982, the battery box was again ahead of the fuel tank.
So long,
Andy
