Digitrax DH163 Speed Jump

I have recently noticed with the DH163 series decoders a speed jump around 18% throttle. The acceleration is smooth up to this point and beyond but right around that point the engine makes a slight jump in speed. Seems to be the equivalent of two or three speed steps. Noticable and annoying! Does anyone know what causes this and more importantly how to fix it. My DH123’s don’t do this and neither does my Lenz Gold series decoders when I swap them out in the same engines. Is it just me or is Digitrax’s Back EMF settings and explanation very confusing? My Gold series Lenz just works with a minimum of adjustment. I would appreciate any input on this subject before I sell my 163’s on ebay. Thank you.

Dave

Dave,

With your DH163, did you try programming in one of the 3 Step speed tables? I noticed the same sort of sudden “lurching” you mentioned at speed step ~042 and 80 something, after I programmed my DH163L0 to one of the 3 Step table settings. If so, this is normal.

If it bothers you, Dave, you can always set CV08 to a value of 008 to restore the decoder to factory settings and see if that doesn’t take care of your problem. Yea, my Lenz Gold decoder in my Stewart FT doesn’t display this anomaly.

Tom

It’s the back-emf, which is why the DH123 series doesn;t have the same problem. You can tune most of it out with adjustments to CV 55, 56, and 57.
