Disassembling Proto 2000 Alco S3?

Hi all,

The recent MR piece on fitting sound in an Atlas HO-scale S3 has me wanting to do the same to my Proto 2000 S3 (different, but similar).

One quick question – anyone know how to remove the cab interior “module” from the cab structure itself? I need to access the rear lamp lens beneath it.

Thanks,

-Evan

There should be a couple of tiny little tabs on the sides of the cab ‘floor’. I’ve had the interior out of one of my S-1’s and it took some careful work with a small flathead jeweler’s screwdriver to carefulyl work it loose. It’s like one of those jobs where you need 3 or 4 hands- you need to hold the shell but NOT by the cab sides since any pressure there only makes it harder to wiggle out the interior, and it would help to have 2 screwdrivers, on in each side. Flat toothpicks mught work as well - that’s an old trick for keeping tabs like that released on one side while you work on the other, but there’s not a lot of room. The exploded diagram in the instruction sheet sort of shows how it goes together.

This loco (like the Atlas - but that part wasn’t mentioned in the article) needs a wiring modification to make it truly DCC ready. You have to remove the motor and solder a wire (should be the orange one) to the lower brush cap, and cut off the little tab that grounds this brush cap to the frame. The place a small piece of electrical tape (kapton tape is even better) i the area under the brush holder to keep it insulated. The Atlas model requires changing the motor screw to a nylon one as well - the P2K models do not.
