Do you have any Ideas for making Guards Rails

There are a couple of places on my layout which are going to be requiring the installation of street/roadside guardrails. You know, the corugated metal kind. I was wondering if the wealth of knowledge here can suggest some raw materials for making them. (HO scale).

Thanks in Advance,
Trevor

I keep sprue around for just this sort of thing. Take a look if you have any and try to adapt that. I am sure somebody produces guard rails. Otherwise I would hit up the Evergreen or Plastruct displays at your LHS, if you have one.

You might want to try gluing some half round styrene of an appropriate size to a thin strip, thus making your own. I got this idea from a recent MR article about scratch building a passenger car. Interpretation and application![;)]

I think pikestuff makes metal guard rails, check walthers web site

Pikestuff does make them and they look great.

Yes, I got some of the Pikestuff ones from Discounttrainsonline. I got ahead of myself, though, so they are still in the envelopes waiting for me to build a road.

I’ve heard of using the plastic coffee stir sticks.

I have a bunch & I’m going to try this before I buy anything from the store.

Pikestuff is where I’ll be going for mine eventually.

Anyone know a good source for “jersey barriers”? I think Rix makes them as the “Modern Median Divider” but I’ve never seen a photo of them.

Pikestuff is good stuff, but if you need more than a foot or two of guard rails it is going to cost you a mint. I made more the six feet of guard rail from strip styrene. Pictures on my website, link is in my signature. Once on site pu***he Layout button. Good luck.

TrevorG I do not know what year your railroad is but I have also seen a lot of guide rails made from wood with wood post. Also I have seen wood/metal posts with a very heavy cable stretched from post to post. [2c]

Jeffshultz take a look at this site it will give you what your looking for I’m pretty sure. Down at the bottom of the page just click and there are some photos and a so on. Hope this helps.

Rix makes the “jersey barriers” They come in two halves, that when glued back to back form a complete barrier. I guess this is so you can curve them. I haven’t used them, but they do look like the real thing.

Well you got a lot of answers before I got here , pikestuff is nice , I have alot of their barrier on my layout.

Thanks guys for all of your responses.

It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve gotten back to this area on the layout, and I just got to reading your replies. I like the Pikestuff guard rails. I also like the coffee stir stick idea. I’ll pilfer a few from the office on Monday and see if I can adapt them. As always I knew you’d be able to help. Thanks again.

FYI, I’m not sure I’m actually modelling any specific time on my layout, but if I had to narrow it down, it would be late 60’s to early 70’s. I’m freelancing and doing my own thing…and having a blast doing it! And that’s what it’s all about…right?

I plan on making my posts from the tips of sprues. If I can find appropriate strip styrene for the the corrugated metal rail I will use that. If not I might go with “steel” cables for the rails. I have also seen places where the posts are place close enough together to create the barrier with no rail at all. I think guard rails are a nice touch but not something I want to spend a lot of time or money on. I don’t really care if the sprues are exactly to scale either. For me this is a place where the good-enough approach is good enough.
