that you’ve started and not finished? I have too many to do and not much time to complete them.
I still have a few and I hope too start a few more when winter gets here .
Make a pledge to yourself to complete two projects before you start the next one. BILL
That is what makes it a hobby. How about projects started and finished then disassembled and redone again? I have a Bowser loco that was ready for paint when I decided to change a few things and add some parts that were missing when I started it. Then I realized I did not get the grabs right and some piping was wrong and so on and so forth. How about setting out to do a simple little thing and then have it snowball into a big project? A missing coupler spring has turned out to be a spring, summer, fall, and winter cleaning and while I was in the cleaning mood the paints were inventoried and a list of needed supplies was drawn up and all my dull knives were sharpened or blades changed and that pesky turnout was repaired and on and on. When I shut the lights off there on the bench was that hopper that needed the coupler spring. Still needing the spring!
Pete
I started with NOTHING and still have most of it left!!!
I agree, Bill, although in my case, and knowing me as I do, I complete one project before starting another.
How can you have not much time to finish a project when you have time to start many others?
I have one long, continuous project: weathering. I also have some structure kits. Overall though, my problem has been only having the one project to work on and getting tired of working on it, lol.
I wish I knew. [swg] Actually, I started school (college) again after the summer break.
I have many projects in the works. I sort of work on things when the mood suits me some nights I feel like weathering or building car kits other nights I’ll work on locos that need to be finished but eventually they’ll all be done or passed on to my kids and maybe they’ll finish them.
I also have several projects in various stages of assembly or fixing up. I’m a believer of doing things that spark my attention at that time, due to something I’ve seen on tv or on the web or even the just because clause. I want to do everything, it’s not that I’m avoiding anything, but one will be happier and do a better job when it doesn’t seem like work. I also run into having some extra time to work on the RR projects, but have to put one project down to let dry, setup/ cure or just think about it, and will move on to another project. I can really think things through and plan out fixes and modifications if I DON"T sit there and think about it, if that makes much sense.
There’s a thread I saw earlier about posting pics of any geared steam, and I was almost tempted to post a pic of my two shays, both in boxes, both half assembled (I’m only responsible for one. The other was from a train show), but that thread might just get me moving on at least one of them. Maybe… If not, it’ll still be there tomarrow.
I only have one project that I’ve started, but have yet to finish. It’s called Building the Empire, and involves converting assorted raw and semifinished materials into a complete, fully sceniced, fully operational representation of the Upper Kiso Valley in late summer/early fall of 1964.
Within that superproject are numerous lesser projects, ranging from Build the engine-change station and subdivision yard at Tomikawa (not yet begun) to Prepare a standard freight car for operation (multiplied by a couple of hundred, done in an hour or so per each when I feel the need.)
The nice thing about having a plethora of semi-finished projects is the opportunity to work on whatever aspect of modeling I think has the most urgent priority at the moment.
Of necesssity, I’ve learned to be patient. If the layout is reasonably finished when I turn 100, that will be nice - but the world won’t end if it isn’t. (My personal world might end before that date, in which case my executor can worry about any unfinished modeling…)

Well, let’s see:
-
Finishing the second deck of the layout
-
Building the helix
-
Painting and decaling six Harriman coaches
-
Adding DCC and a lead truck to an MDC 2-8-0. Oh yeah, it has to be painted and decaled as well.
-
Building another MDC 2-8-0. Replacing original drivers with 56 inch ones. Add DCC.
-
Weathering Genesis F units.
-
Weathering AC-12
-
Rebuilding Bachmann GS-4.
-
Scratchbuild Los Gatos Depot
-
And a host of lesser projects…
Always…
Oh , all you lucky guys! As my funds for model railroading our down to zilch, zero, nada, null, rien, I have no projects going, other than dreamng and planning for the better time to come!
I haven’t started anything in so long I don’t remember whether I finished it or not!
The list gets longer every time I finish one… How about changing track plan mid stream, learning ops, working on geting the sub scenery done, painting some 24 DPM kits that are already built, making trees for others, making trees for me to use when its time… trying to dream up a convincing argument to buy a shay, trying to fix an old bachmann chassis so I can scratch build my own unique logging loco…
Tempes fugit…
My layout - Westport Terminal RR - is not yet finished. There’re a lot of unscenicked spots.
My modul Diamond Valley is not finished. There’s still to build a shed for the scrap yard. For now I have a paper building. You see it at the end of the yard.

And I’ve started with my Silver Creek module.
I didn’t mention all those smaller projects like cars and engines. [:)]

I’ve got 'round a half dozen kits to build, but I won’t get to those until the layout room’s done, which is the big stalling point until I can scrape together enough money to finish it. Then the real fun begins anew.
I’ve also got several other hobbies which demand time and money, not to mention regular life and family related expenses/demands.
That’s why I continue to buy lottery tickets, I could retire today at 43 and still die with unfnished projects! [:D]
I have at least 20 cars that need assembled, 4-5 buildings, a layout that needs to be sceniced and finished, then I get to start/finish weathering all the rolling stock on top of what needs to be assembled. Now I just have to find a new hangout to learn more weathering.
My current project list:
-
Finish tuning up/upgrading locomotives. Almost done with all of my Athearn locomotives.
-
Finish constructing my station platforms. Got all of the parts separated. Now just need to paint and assemble.
-
Finish inventory of all rolling stock.
-
Clean off all items on layout (tools, paperwork, etc.).
