Does any one model catapiller equipment or cat train. Thought about adding that to my layout want opions.
My wife’s cousin has always been fascinated by construction equipment. He has several Caterpillar “knock off” vehicles including a Payloader on his layout. Scale is reasonably close to HO. He also has a n HO “John Deere” tractor dealership as well, featuring the tractors from Athearn. I have a set too.
I’d like to have authentic models of Cats as well, but for me I have a hard time finding any quality models of Cats or other construction vehciles from the 1960s and 70s.
I thought about “fudging” a bit, but when I saw the current offerings in the Walthers Catalog, those machines looked way too modern with the curved body lines, smooth sheet metal, and oversized glass. Construction machines from back then were very boxy in design with sharp body lines, small windows, and visible rivets and carriage bolts.
I will sometime.

sounds good icmr and antonio. i might have them for a few mow projects and on a NS run though train.
I like those kind.

ditto to that
I did on a previous layout where I had it looking as if a new road was going in, but when I tore the layout down, I let a friend of mine talk me out of everything.
I’m waiting on a log loader that I recently ordered that will appear as if it’s unloading logs off of a trailer at my lumber mill, but that’ll be about it for a while.

I’m just starting a layout & was pondering putting a Cat Manufacturing Plant somewhere in it. I own a book called the Caterpillar Century which has lots of great pictures & references of equipment in there proper timelines. Just a suggestion but its really helping me in my search for vehicles.
BTW boxy old machinery RULES!
Antonio,
Quite a few years ago,a company called {UMEX} , made HO scale plastic models of 60’s and 70’s caterpillar equipment. Sometimes ,you can find these models on e-bay,also if you look under ROCO .

Hello all,
Caterpillar,John Deere,Komatsu,Demag…love them all. Antonio here’s a link to ADM diecast, although,I didn’t see any UMEX. There is a bunch of HO scale stuff. This company prices are off the chart, depends on how bad you want 60’s and 70’s heavy equipment.

I plan on modeling this:
This was at the feed mill where I used to work. Most I ever moved was 6 loaded cars it works pretty good and it’s kinda fun to use. It’s a 938f CAT if anyone wanted to know.
Lee,
What scale are you using,to build this loader / railcar mover ? If HO…I think custom finnishes, makes what your looking for.
Patrick
I’m modeling HO scale, but it will be much more fun to bash my own.
I grew up in Peoria and my father worked for Cat and then the local Cat dealer. Guess you could say I was afflitced, er, think affectionately of those big yellow machines from an early age. I’ve clumb all over most of them in the dealer’s show room when I was younger. Later the Army gave me a whole company of engineers and all their tools including blades, graders and pans to do some work. Of course the Army painted 'em all green, but they were still Cats. So yes I would really like to see more Cat equipment represented in HO Scale.

Hope you weren’t running this loader on a grade LOL thanks or the pics!
with the cat off the track will it knock the cars off
K
Actually it is a slight grade, enough of a grade that I once bumped a CN car loaded with oats it started to move so I jumped out of the loader tried to crank the brake down but of course the momentum was greater than the weak brakes.
The car hit the derailer and layed over on it’s side separating both trucks, was not cool called NS office and they told me I needed to arrange the lifting power to up-right the car. It took 2, 100 ton cranes.
I have never made it that far, but the coupler slides pretty far to the left or right making it pretty hairy; its seems if you were to turn to far with any momentum it would flip the loader and the cars would smash into you.
out thats a cool pic good luck modeling it.
I’m modeling Peoria circa 1950, and part of the prototype mainline that will be on my layout will be the P&PU in East Peoria. Considering that track was THE rail link between CAT and the rest of the world, you bet I’ll be modeling CAT equipment.
Since I’m modeling the 1950s, I can use most of the Woodland Scenics metal crawlers and scrapers to represent CAT machinery. They’re not the best castings in the world, but at least they add plenty of weight to flat cars! I’ve also got a few of the Life Like stationary diesel generators. Yeah, they were shipped crated up, but then you can’t see what’s being shipped!
oh thats cool i model pesent day at the moment
