Double stacks - what keeps them from tipping over?

My son and I were stopped yesterday by the daily CN intermodal. He asked a question I couldnt answer…“what keeps the top containers from falling off?”

I had a couple of ideas, but no specific knowledge.

Anyone out there able to help?

Ed

Same thing that keeps diapers on - pins in the corners.

The “pins in the corners” on containers are generally referred to as _IBC_s (Inter Box Connectors) and look like this

Here;s the product page the above image is linked from:

Here is an earlier thread with more info, and some interesting photos:

Note that the IBCs are not necessarily located in the corners of the container. In order to maintain compatibility, the 53’ and 48’ connector slots are the same distance apart as those on 40’ containers, so they are not at the corners.

This image shows the IBC locations quite nicely. Look for the matching little white squares about 6 feet in from the ends of these 53’ containers.

SJ, you rule!

(And, of course, you’re absolutely correct!)

but when the wind blows very hard look out. Tornados have tiped quite a few.

Thank you BC !

I know so little, I just give basics until the pros can elaborate.

I did know about the different container length part, but had never seen a “pin” until the pix - so thought I shouldn’t tread too far into unknown water.

Tornados do in more than just double stacks…normally any type car on rails.
