Thought I’d share this with you.
I bought a Digitraxx SFX064D decoder with a 28mm 32ohm speaker. In attempt to hear what it sounded like I went “a routing” for the perfect speaker enclosure.
Found one, a Dremel Cut Off Wheel canister. Fit like a charm.

A perfect speaker enclosure a Dremel cut off plastic case is not. There is a formula out on the web some where for the Ideal volume of air behind a speaker…and then that volume of air must be sealed off.
Start by using the golden ratio of 1:1.6:2.5…this will ensure that not too much resonance will occur.

I hazard to disagree. If I’m not mistaken the ratio is a minimum clearance requirement and from the installs I’ve done I can honestly say I have not been disapointed with the results.
With most of the installs I’ve used the Tender cavities, insuring they are completely sealed and as I’ve said the sound output has been very good, crisp, clear and with more than satisfactory results.
Granted if you were to hook up an oscilloscope it would show peak performance may differ with size and shape of the enclosure but from what I can hear (classically trained musician in my youth and can still hold a tune and yes I just had my hearing tested a week ago and can hear just fine though the wife may disagree) I’m more than pleased with the eclosures I’ve devised to fit the the most obscure shapes and sized cavities.

With sound, it always comes down to a subjective choice. You can crunch all the formulas and numbers and still end up with a poor sounding speaker. When building speakers you have to use your ears as much or more than a calculator. (30yrs experience audio/music biz).

I was commenting on his use of the word “perfect”. Nothing more. If he were to say “I just found a great use for cut off disks’ containers…” then I would absolutely agree with him. There are other solutions that would give off better sound…

Actually the best sounding loco I’ve got is my brass CNR 4-6-4 5ka. The Vanderbilt tender was problematic as I didn’t want to chew up the coal bin so I went through the bottom opening. I don’t know if it’s the chamber or if it’s the brass but I am really happy with the sounds.

This is because of the huge volume of air behind the speaker. The Dremel case isnt very liberal.
