Looks like a fun series. Keep up the good work!
Hi Howard.
A “Cowl” refers to that type of locomotive’s full-width enclosed bodywork. Notice the lack of walkways down the sides of those three units. Sometimes they’re also called “Draper Tapers” after creator William L. Draper.
I guess I was being a bit redundant when I said “Wide body cowl”… since by definition a cowl is already wide-bodied.
We’re going to make sure terminology like this is included in future installments. But if you ever have a question I’ll try my best to find an answer.
Hope you enjoyed!
DH
Cowl? Wide body cowl?
Anybody wanna explain?
(thanks in advance!)
Just watched my first episode - liked the “tips”. Good info even for the guy who has railfanned before.
Curious - What kind of camera do you have mounted on your hood? Is it only attached by suction cups? Any kind of backup to save it if the suction cup fails?
Thanks guys. We’ll keep the tips coming.
Michael, I have a GoPro attached to the hood with 3M adhesive tape (that came included with the camera.) I was worried it might fall off at first but it was actually more difficult taking it off the hood when I was finished. A little muscle popped it off and it didn’t leave a dent or take paint with it, so it worked perfectly. As a note however, the tape loses “sticking power” the more you use it.
I will be sure to talk more about this in a future installment!
Cowls! WOOT!!
WOOT!
Cool I love you’re vids but every time I go rail fanning I get in trouble by the rail police how do y’all do it and I tell them the same story I was rail fanning but still a good vid
