Hey y’all.
I’ve been planning on airbrushing one of my engines to have the Rio grande’s green boiler jacket. My only issue is I cannot find anything online that matches this color. The color I’m looking for is more specifically the one that D&RGW 491 wore for a little bit.
Here is that color:

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Could you ask the Colorado Railroad Museum what color they used?
Honestly, I didn’t think about that. I’ll see if i can
It might be some kind of olive drab. I don’t know for sure. If all else fails, zoom into the boiler on the picture, print it off, and take it to the paint department of your favorite hardware store and see what’s closest-looking.
If you do find the color palette, see if Tru Color has that color in their selection. They have so many paint colors, it’s worth a shot..
I’ll definitely look. I sent them an email about it a few days ago and haven’t heard back, so I might have to hop into a hardware store and find the color.
Assuming the color in the photo is 100% correct it looks to me like the closest over-the-counter paint available would be Tamiya Olive Drab 2. It’s a “rattle can” paint but I’ve used it and have had very good results.
I’m definitely thinking about the spray paint. To make sure, is it TS-28?
The problem with OD is you’ll need to gloss coat it: Drab is very matte.
Tamiya semi-gloss clear is what I use for an overspray, not too glossy, not too matte. Seals the decals well and looks good.
26$ is a bit up there for 2 cans of spray paint… guess i’m going to have to paint a few models to make it worth it
Well, in my experience one can was more than enough for an O Gauge engine, a Post-War Lionel 2065 to be exact. But as the car ads say “Your mileage may vary!”
