Dual Gauge Layout Plans

I am trying to find information on layouts which have both standard and o gauge track so I can run both on the same layout.

Any information would be appreciated.

[#welcome] I’m not sure what you mean by “standard and O” gauge. There is “Standard O” and there is Traditional “O27” along with FasTrack. Perhaps you could be a little more specfic. Thanks.

The term “standard gauge” used in reference to toy trains means the 2 1/8-inch gauge manufactured by Lionel before World War II. It supposedly resulted from Joshua Cowen’s misinterpretation of the specification for the Märklin number-2 gauge, which was 2 1/8 inches between the centers of the running rails and 2 inches between the inside faces. Other manufacturers, like American Flyer, were obliged to refer to their 2 1/8-inch track as “wide gauge”.

Traindaddy,

Standard Gauge is larger than O ( 2 1/8", I beleive) and preceeded O in Lionel’s History. “Standard Gauge” was a marketing gimmick by Lionel, they were the ONLY ones producing it at first, but by naming it Standard Gauge, consumers thought that the other gauges were non-standard. Standard Gauge was not Standard to anything, except that size that only Lionel originally built. It was a rather effective marketing statedgy, and other manufacturers did eventually build some standard gauge trains.

I beleive that it was in 1906, that Lionel designed the 3-Rail O-Gauge track that we are familiar with today. Lionel discontinued buiulding “Standard Gauge” trains in about 1939. I beleive that it was around 1990, or so that Lionel reintroduced “Standard Gauge” and it is available again today.

I beleive that MTH has also built some modern “Standard Gauge” trains, but I wont bet my house on it.

In the 1980’s New bright, a maker of G guage batterry operated trains also made “standard” guage trains thjat ran on batterys, they didn’t make too many of them either. So if you find a complete set you may never find another one again. I only saw one on Ebay once and the seller compared the new bright standard guage to “g” guage and “o” guage track, he also had some lionel Standard guage track and the locomotive and cars fit right on the lionel track

DOUG: BOB: RAYMOND: I understand but I was just attempting to get JFB’s interpretation of gauge in his question. I thought by asking we could offer some advice. As always, thanks.

To answer the original question, I don’t know of any published track plans that have both Standard Gauge and O gauge on the same layout. If I were doing this , I would have an island layout with the Standard gauge trains on the bottom and toward the front and the O gauge trains on a mountain division toward the back. That will give some “forced perspective”.

If dual-gauge track is what you are interested in, it has been manufactured; but I don’t remember by whom.

Gar-Grave has dual gauge track. I don’t know about switches.
