Theres not to many steel mill fans on MR’s forum,but those of you that are should know what this crane is. Union RR in PA ,has one operating at its barge unloading center and this is kinda where I got the idea for this crane.
Shes built from all sorts of things…from styrene signs to old toy parts.Didn’t turn out to bad,now all I have to do is build the layout around her. I’m thinking of naming her “Big Burtha”,cause she does look like a burtha. Brawny looking broad indeed, but still a crane.
Perhaps you can help me name her, I’m open for suggestions ?
The model stands 15 &1/2 " tall by 21" in length with boom fully extended.Everything works,meaning all the joints move and bucket too, the crane rotates a full 360 degrees.
WOW! I can’t even get finished a 50-tonner. Great job on that build looks alot like the prototype pic. Have you ever thought about doing a scratchbuilding tutorial thread?
Sure ,if some other folks would like a tutorial on building one. I should have made a templete of the crane like I did the kress carrier.Would have been much easier than trying to explain how I built it.
Once again I didn’t have a scale ruler to use,all done by the skin of my teeth.Gonna have to get one of these one day.
The pedestal is made out of 2" PVC conectors and the rest of it is styrene signs from lowes.Heck the cab was the hardest part to build,using clear plastic sheet,forming the windows with styrene strips and then painting the cab .The booms where free drawn on styrene then cut out and glued together.The bucket was done the same,shoot the whole crane was built this way.The counter weight for the stick boom is filled with lead weight ,for easy movement.
It was a pretty straight forward build,much easier than I first thought. I didn’t added the hydraulic cylinders to the counter weight ,because I couldn’t find the right looking ones {had to scratch build the hydraulic cylinders too},I’ll add them once I find the correct looking ones.
But to answer your question…sure I could do a tutorial at a latter date if folks would like.
