I’m looking for some information regarding the operations of the E&LS. I’m going to be in the area next month and would like to do a little train chasin out towards Channing. Thanks!
I made a spcial trip to photograph the E&LS (and go out and get blasted with some old work buddies of mine in Green Bay) back in 1994. I actually had very good luck on that Sat. morning (hung-over as I was).
The “hot spot” for the E&LS was, and I believe still is, Crivitz, WI, where their north-south main and their branch to Marinette splits-off (all ex-MILW trackage I believe). I can’t speak to their current operations, but before I travelled there I called their offices and the nice lady I spoke with actually suggested Crivitz, and she was right. I photographed a meet on the main between two freights, and another southbounder that was stopping there to set cars out in their yard (all units, except one former Conrail GP38-2, were ex-Reserve Mining SD9s).
I know Crivitz is quite a bit south of Channing, but maybe if you call their headquarters like I did, they might help out.
I had such good luck it motivated me to order an undecorated Atlas N scale SD9 and custom-paint and decal it to match one of the units I saw (and it turned-out perfect - it’s one of my yard switchers now). Testers’ cream and rust combine to make the perfect match for the brown on the SDs.
