Early Diesel Locomotives of the NYC RR

I would like to begin collecting HO scale models of the NYC RR. I want to start focusing on their “early” diesel locomotives. From the very first ones in the 1940’s(?) to about the late 1960’s.

I have tried googling the topic with no luck.

Does anyone know where on the net I can find a list of every type of early diesel locomotive that the NYC had??? and maybe with pictures???

Try this link, took me 20 seconds to find it with Bing

I know you are talking about diesels, but I have two brass LMB H-10’s and absolutely love them. The one has a Sagami motor and is possibly the best running locomotive I have. The other has the original motor and it runs well, but grinds alot. The detail is great and they both do run well. Worth every penny, IMO.

Hey TH&B,

First off: [#welcome] to the forum! Good to have you aboard! [:)]

These links aren’t really heavy on pictures but do contain some very good roster info - e.g. BLT date, road #, etc:

The Diesel Shop - Home page

The Diesel Shop - New York Central page

The Diesel Shop - Builders page

This site has some great pictures of various fallen flags:

Here’s the links to the New York Central pages:

This is a great site about yard swichers:

Yard Limit - Spotter’s Guide

Here’s a few of the New York Central early diesels available off the top of my head:

  • Atlas HH600 (Will be available in May with DCC and sound)
  • Atlas S2/S4
  • Athearn RS-3
  • BLI SW7
  • Proto 2000 S1/S3
  • Stewart VO-660/VO-1000

Hope that helps…

Tom

Maybe books are going out of style, but I’m liking my copy of the NYCSHS “Diesel Locomotives of the New York Central System” by Edson, Vail, and Smith. William Edson was Mechanical Engineer of motive power. The book has a breakdown by NYC diesel class and purchase order, and sample photos of each model. It also has data for hump trailer rebuilds from retired or semi-wrecked diesels and electrics. Also renumbering and retirement data. The book may be out of print, but maybe you can find a copy somewhere.

Web site authors can omit anything that doesn’t interest them or that they can’t find information on. The Canada Southern website has a good collection of info and photos, though.

I’ve been frustrated by the lack of accurate commercial models for NYC diesels, at least until more recently. Now I can dream of picking up a model of a Fairbanks-Morse or Baldwin road switcher.[:)]

I have HO scale Bowser/Stewart VO-1000, NYC 8606 and 8707 built in Feb. 1945. They have Tsunami decoders and are used to haul a Pacemaker Freight string of cars.

I also have the Spectrum GE 70 ton by Bachmann that the NYC had.

Dude, you got to learn to search the 'Net.
