Early Father's Day Present [Tennessee Valley Railroad]

I was in Chattanooga last week and my family treated me to a ride on the Tennessee Valley Railway. Nothing better than riding the rails with the ones you love best.

Enjoy. I did. (click to enlarge)

Thanks for posting the photos! That observation car in the top photo had me wondering! It has a “Pennsy-ish” squared-off end yet has Pullman six wheeled trucks. I did some searching and found the NC&StL #1103 which became L&N’s 2599! Look here and scroll to the next to last photo for a look at her in better days.

I didn’t see a mention of the car in the TVRM site.

I’d love to wander around those display tracks — it looks like a pretty good collection!

I had a very enjoyable experience with some of my grandchildren earlier this year on the Cleveland-to-Akron, Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley Line.

This was our train…

And THIS was our impatient conductor — keeping tabs on the “on time” performance.

Glad you had a good time! Ed

That’s wild. As I understand it, the cars in the “staging” area at the museum depot are out of service, at least for an extended period of time. Most were open for a walk-through.

Passing over a reconstructed bridge.

Enjoying the ride.

I have enjoyed this rr for several years. A few years back for father’s day, my wife gave me a gift that enabled me to operate the gp7. I had to become a member, but I was able to run it from one end of the museum to the other for a couple of hours. When the gates opened to the public they gave us a cab ride in one of their steamers, private tour of the shops and a ride on the turntable. I really enjoyed myself, and this is a good museum with friendly people.

Our tour guide explains how a turntable works.

Also has its own wiki page and was driven by photographer O. Winston Link in the movie October Sky - one of my favorite moives, me being from West Virginia.

Critter.

Many years ago, my wife and I stayed in Chattanooga at a hotel that had railroad cars as rooms. They were decorated in the victorian style and very plush.

We also took a dinner boat ride on the Tennessee River that went through the locks around the dam. Very cool.

It looks like the rail road museum has really expanded since we were there. That’s a good excuse to go back.
