Easily movable layouts

I’ve got a layout in mind that I want to make, I just need to make a table that I can fold the legs up for easy transportation. Any recommendations?

When i was young I planned to move a 6’ x8’ section. Now that I am older 2’x3’ would be huge. The leg question begs another one. How big is the railroad and the vehicle it will travelv in?

It’s an 8’x7’ layout broken down into 2’x2’ and 2’x1’ sections. They’d be moved around in a minivan. I’m planning on having the sections rest on top of the legs in order to make moving them and setting them up easier.

Folding table leg hardware (such as is used on banquet tables) can be purchased ready-made. These tend to be realtively short (roughly 30 inches), so some extend the legs with conduit or something similar.

Search “folding table leg hardware” for many options.

As has been mentioned, keeping the sections relatively small (say 2’ X 6’ or so) will make them easier to move and easier to adapt to new locations.

The modular club guys are the experts in this. They usually make 2x4 modules that connect together. Hopefully one of them can give you good advice. I think there is also a book about modular constuction.

You can make them really light with beaded foam (my whole layout is made of this stuff) on a 1x4 box.
