MOYERS JR., EDWARD L.

Edward L. Moyers Jr., 77, died Monday, June 5, 2006 in Naples, FL. Mr.
Moyers was born to Edward L. Moyers and Lucile Lewis Moyers on October
3, 1928 near Meridian, MS.

He was reared in Vicksburg and was a 1947 graduate of Chamberlain-Hunt
Military Academy in Port Gibson, MS. He served in the United States
Navy
in the Korean War. He was a 1955 graduate of Louisiana Tech University.

Mr. Moyers had a long and distinguished career in the railroad
industry,
mainly with the Illinois Central Railroad in Mississippi, Louisiana,
Kentucky and Illinois. In 1985, he became President and C.E.O. of
MidSouth Rail Corporation in Jackson. In 1989, he was named President
and C.E.O. of Illinois Central Railroad in Chicago, Illinois, serving
until 1993. Following a short retirement, he became President and
C.E.O. of Southern Pacific Railway in Denver, Colorado in 1993, a position he
held until 1995.

After retirement, he continued to be active in the railroad business,
overseeing the management and construction of two Brazilian rail
projects.

He was also a former member of the Board of Trustees of Millsaps
College
and the Board of Directors of Deposit Guaranty National Bank. He served
as Chairman of Louisiana Tech’s Centennial Development Program, and
received the Tower Medallion for permanent recognition as a
distinguished alumnus. In 1989, he received the Jackson Journal of
Business Captain of Industry Award and in 1995 he was named Railway Age
Magazine’s Railroader of the Year.

He was a member of Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church in Naples, FL. He was
preceded in death by his parents, sister Elladean Moyers Hall and
brother James Olin Moyers. He is survived by his wife, Helen H. Moyers
of Naples, Florida; son and daugh

This is sad. My condolances to his family and friends.

I read somewhere that he came up with the idea of single tracking/CTCing the IC’s mainline while in the shower.

Legend has it that he thought that they could scrap the rail from the second main and use the proceeds to pay for the CTC installation.

Pretty good use of assets, in my opinion.

Truely a loss to the railroad world.

Very very sad, it seems like a lot of well known people in the railroad community are dying recently.
I understand that Mr Moyers was the one at the Southern Pacific who gave the go-ahead to single track part of Donner Pass (in CA) and Lovelock, Nevada area. This was done in the 1994 time period and allowed SP to shift that rail south to the expanding SP Sunset Route.
