Caterpillar Inc.'s acquisition of EMD has drastically changed the latter’s labor-management policies to one of the hardest-line stances in U.S. business. Outsourcing American jobs has become a corporate objective despite the fact that Caterpillar has been continually and extraordinarily profitable here at home with U.S. workers, most of them unionized.
More jobs going overseas
This probably has little to do with outsourcing just Brazilian growth. I was in Brazil on business in May and that socialist-leaning country is growing by leaps and bounds and is building a booming infrastructure. They are a market for locomotives - and airplanes (think Embraer.) The highways are built by Europeans and rail is reviving ---- and nearby Argentina is reviving its rails. Ironically, thousands of skilled Americans are emigrating to Brazil in search of good jobs.
Emd has become the poor orphan child that is being passed around from new owner to new owner. This is another attempt to remain viable in a very demanding market. If they want to survive they must return to the formula that worked in the past … quality design, quality manufacturing, quality marketing and quality service and support.

EMD Brazil is producing the SD70ACe/45 model, a bit bigger than the normal SD70ACe. It has a bigger radiator section with three fans and the engine compartment also has more tall doors. The model can accept the engine and other stufs to assembly the SD80ACe that EMD started to produce to Vale mining Co in London plant.
